Context of Genesis 24:55

Genesis 24 tells the story of Abraham sending his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant travels to Abraham’s relatives and, after praying for guidance, meets Rebekah. Rebekah responds generously to the servant by drawing water for him and his camels. The servant recognizes that events have unfolded in a remarkable way and eventually speaks with Rebekah’s family about his purpose.

After hearing the servant’s account and recognizing the circumstances surrounding Rebekah, her family agrees that she should go with him. However, when the servant wants to leave promptly, Rebekah’s brother and mother ask for additional time. Genesis 24:55 records their request that she remain with them for a period before departing.

Detailed English Explanation

1. “Her brother and her mother”

The verse specifically identifies Rebekah’s brother and mother as the people making the request. Her brother Laban is an important figure in the surrounding narrative, and he is involved in the family discussions concerning Rebekah.

Their response is understandable from a human and family perspective. Rebekah is about to leave her household and travel to a distant place to marry Isaac. The departure is therefore a significant emotional moment for the family.

The request also demonstrates that major life transitions can involve different perspectives. The servant is focused on completing his mission, while Rebekah’s family naturally wants additional time with her.

2. “Let the damsel abide with us”

The word “damsel” in the KJV refers to the young woman, Rebekah. Her family asks that she remain with them temporarily.

This is not necessarily a rejection of the proposed marriage. Rather, it is a request for delay. They appear willing for Rebekah to go, but they want her to stay a little longer before beginning the journey.

This distinction is important. The family is not saying that she must never leave. They are asking for more time.

3. “A few days, at the least ten”

The phrase concerning “a few days” and “ten” has generated discussion among biblical commentators because the underlying Hebrew wording can be understood in more than one way. Some traditional interpretations have connected it with a longer period, while many modern translations understand the passage as referring to approximately ten days.

The KJV presents the familiar wording “a few days, at the least ten.” Other translations render the idea as “ten days or so,” “about ten days,” or “at least ten days.”

The central point of the passage does not depend on resolving every detail of the ancient expression. The family wants Rebekah to have additional time at home before leaving.

4. “After that she shall go”

This final phrase is particularly significant. Rebekah’s family accepts that she will eventually leave.

The issue is when she will leave, not necessarily whether she will leave.

The servant, however, does not want the journey unnecessarily delayed. In the following verse, he responds that he should not be detained because God has prospered his journey, and he asks to be sent back to his master.

This creates an important moment in the narrative. The family has one desire, the servant has another practical concern, and the matter is ultimately placed before Rebekah herself.

5. Rebekah’s decision is important

The next verses provide one of the most important details for understanding Genesis 24:55. Instead of allowing the family disagreement to determine everything, they call Rebekah and ask her directly whether she will go with the man.

Her answer is simple:

“I will go.”

This response shows Rebekah’s willingness to move forward rather than remain behind for the requested period.

Her decision is significant because she is not merely being carried along by other people’s plans. She personally agrees to undertake the journey.

6. A lesson about faith and decisive action

Genesis 24:55 can be read as part of a larger lesson about faith, family attachment, decision-making, and moving forward.

Rebekah is leaving the familiar environment of her family and traveling toward an unknown future. Her family understandably wants more time with her. The servant, meanwhile, recognizes that his mission should continue.

The following decision demonstrates that there are times when a person must move forward even when others would prefer additional delay.

This does not mean that every delay is wrong. Nor does the passage teach that family wishes should be ignored. Rather, the narrative emphasizes that Rebekah ultimately makes her own decision.

7. The importance of the surrounding verses

Genesis 24:55 should not be interpreted in isolation. Verses 56–58 complete the thought.

The servant asks not to be detained, the family calls Rebekah, and Rebekah is asked whether she will go. Her response is affirmative.

Therefore, the sequence is:

  1. Rebekah’s family asks her to stay longer.
  2. Abraham’s servant asks not to be delayed.
  3. The family decides to ask Rebekah.
  4. Rebekah chooses to go.
  5. The journey proceeds.

This makes Genesis 24:55 part of a larger story about a significant decision.

“And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.” — Genesis 24:55, KJV

“I will go.”
