English Explanation

1. The setting of Zechariah 1:9

Zechariah 1:9 is part of a prophetic vision recorded near the beginning of the book of Zechariah. The vision occurred in the second year of Darius, on the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month. Zechariah saw a man riding a red horse standing among myrtle trees, with red, speckled, and white horses behind him.

The vision appears during a period when the Jewish people had experienced the consequences of national judgment and exile. The opening part of Zechariah calls the people to return to God. The visions that follow communicate God’s continuing concern for His people and His purposes for Jerusalem.

Therefore, Zechariah 1:9 should not be viewed as an isolated statement. It introduces an important conversation in which the prophet seeks understanding about what he has been shown.

2. “Then said I”

The words “Then said I” show Zechariah’s response to the vision.

Zechariah does not simply observe the supernatural scene without asking questions. He wants to understand its meaning. His question demonstrates that receiving a vision does not necessarily mean that every detail is immediately understandable.

This is an important spiritual principle: seeing something is not always the same as understanding it.

A person may read Scripture, hear a message, or encounter a difficult circumstance and still need wisdom to understand its significance. Zechariah provides an example of bringing that uncertainty forward and asking for clarification.

3. “O my lord, what are these?”

Zechariah respectfully asks, “What are these?”

The immediate context indicates that his question concerns the things he has seen in the vision, particularly the horses and those associated with them. The following verses provide the explanation: the man among the myrtle trees identifies them as those whom the Lord has sent to move throughout the earth.

The question is significant because Zechariah does not pretend to understand something that he does not understand.

There is humility in his response.

Instead of making a confident assumption about the meaning of the vision, he asks the angel for an explanation. This teaches readers the value of humility when approaching difficult biblical passages.

4. “And the angel that talked with me”

The verse identifies an angel who was speaking with Zechariah. In the vision, this angel functions as an interpreter or guide who helps Zechariah understand what he sees.

This pattern occurs several times in the book of Zechariah. The prophet receives symbolic visions and then asks questions, while an angel provides explanations.

The angel’s role reminds us that the vision has a message that needs to be understood rather than merely admired as a mysterious supernatural experience.

5. “I will shew thee what these be”

The angel’s response is reassuring:

“I will shew thee what these be.”

The answer does not immediately give every detail. Instead, the angel promises to reveal the meaning.

The next verses explain that the figures represented those sent by the Lord to go throughout the earth. They report that they have traveled through the earth and found it at rest.

This creates a movement in the passage:

Vision → Question → Explanation

That pattern is central to understanding Zechariah’s prophetic visions.

6. The larger message

The broader passage eventually moves toward a message of comfort. The angel of the Lord asks how long mercy will be withheld from Jerusalem and Judah, and the Lord responds with good and comforting words. The message continues with the promise of mercy toward Jerusalem and the restoration of God’s purposes for His people.

Consequently, Zechariah 1:9 is more than a simple question about horses. It opens a vision that communicates God’s awareness of events on earth and His continuing concern for Jerusalem.

The passage encourages readers to recognize that circumstances that appear confusing or discouraging do not mean that God has forgotten His purposes.

7. Lessons for Christians and Bible readers

Zechariah 1:9 offers several practical lessons.

First, it is acceptable to ask for understanding. Zechariah asks a direct question rather than pretending that he understands everything.

Second, humility is important when studying Scripture. Difficult passages should be approached carefully rather than with unsupported assumptions.

Third, God can bring clarity. The angel tells Zechariah that he will be shown what the vision means.

Fourth, difficult circumstances do not necessarily indicate God’s absence. The larger vision points toward God’s continuing attention to Jerusalem and His intention to bring comfort.

Fifth, biblical interpretation should consider context. The meaning of verse 9 becomes much clearer when verses 8–17 are read together. The horses, riders, the man among the myrtle trees, and the angel’s explanation all belong to one prophetic scene.

“Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.”

1. “Then said I” — “تب میں نے کہا”

2. “O my lord, what are these?”

آیت میں “the angel that talked with me” یعنی وہ فرشتہ ذکر کیا گیا ہے جو زکریاہ سے گفتگو کر رہا تھا۔

4. “I will shew thee what these be”
