Detailed Explanation in English

1. “I see your father’s countenance”

The word “countenance” means the face or visible expression of a person. In this passage, Jacob is not simply saying that he noticed Laban’s facial expression. He is recognizing a change in Laban’s attitude toward him.

Earlier, Laban had been willing to work with Jacob and had benefited greatly from Jacob’s labor. But Genesis 31 explains that Laban’s attitude was no longer the same. Jacob could see from Laban’s behavior that their relationship had changed. Genesis 31:2 specifically says that Jacob observed Laban’s countenance and saw that it was not toward him as before.

This gives the verse an important practical lesson: people can change. Someone who once welcomed us may later become distant, suspicious, hostile, or unfair. Jacob understood this reality because he could see the change in Laban.

2. “That it is not toward me as before”

This phrase describes a change in favor and relationship. Laban no longer regarded Jacob as he had previously.

The following verses provide more context. Jacob explains that he had served Laban with all his strength, yet Laban had repeatedly changed his wages. Jacob says that his wages had been changed ten times, but God did not allow Laban to destroy or seriously harm him.

Therefore, Genesis 31:5 is not merely about someone’s facial expression. It is part of a larger story involving difficult employment, changing circumstances, family tension, unfair treatment, and God’s protection.

Jacob was facing a situation in which he could no longer depend upon Laban’s goodwill. Yet he had another source of confidence.

3. “But the God of my father hath been with me”

This is the heart of Genesis 31:5.

Notice the contrast: Laban’s attitude had changed, but God’s presence had not.

Jacob does not deny that the situation is difficult. He does not pretend that Laban is treating him well. Instead, he acknowledges the problem and then directs his attention to God’s faithfulness.

The phrase “the God of my father” connects Jacob’s present experience with the faith of his family. Jacob had learned about God through the covenant history of his father Isaac and grandfather Abraham. In Genesis 31, God Himself had also instructed Jacob to return to the land of his fathers and promised, “I will be with thee.”

This makes the verse especially meaningful. Jacob’s security was not ultimately based on Laban’s attitude, his employment situation, or his human relationships. His confidence rested on the fact that God was with him.

4. God’s presence during difficult circumstances

Genesis 31:5 teaches that God’s presence does not necessarily mean that every human relationship will remain peaceful.

Jacob was still experiencing conflict. He was still dealing with an unfair employer and a difficult family situation. Nevertheless, God had not abandoned him.

This is an important distinction. Sometimes people assume that if God is with them, every difficulty should immediately disappear. Jacob’s story shows something different. God’s presence can remain with a person while the difficult situation is still happening.

A person’s circumstances may change, people’s opinions may change, and opportunities may change, but God’s faithfulness remains a source of strength.

5. A lesson about human approval

Another important message in this verse concerns the desire for human approval.

Jacob noticed that Laban’s face was no longer toward him as before. Naturally, such a change could have produced fear, anxiety, or discouragement. Yet Jacob did not make Laban’s approval the foundation of his life.

The verse effectively moves from “your father’s countenance” to “the God of my father.”

That contrast is powerful. Human approval can be temporary. God’s presence is a deeper source of confidence.

This does not mean that relationships are unimportant. Rather, it teaches that a person should not allow another person’s changing opinion to determine their entire sense of security or worth.

6. The wider context of Genesis 31

Genesis 31 describes the point at which Jacob decides to leave Laban and return toward his homeland. Laban’s sons had complained that Jacob had gained wealth from their father, and Jacob could see that Laban’s attitude had changed. God then directed Jacob to return to the land of his fathers.

Later in the chapter, Jacob explains that God had seen the way Laban had treated him and had protected him. God also reminds Jacob of Bethel and tells him to leave the land and return to his relatives.

Therefore, Genesis 31:5 is part of a larger testimony: Jacob recognized the change in people around him, but he also recognized the continuing faithfulness of God.

Genesis 31:5 Meaning in Simple English

In simple words, Jacob was saying:

“I can see that your father no longer treats me with the same favor he once did. His attitude toward me has changed. But despite this change, the God who has guided and protected my family has remained with me.”

The verse is therefore a message about God’s faithfulness in changing circumstances.

“And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.” — Genesis 31:5 (KJV)

“I see your father’s countenance”

“That it is not toward me as before”

“But the God of my father hath been with me”
