Genesis 31:6 Meaning in English

The central message of Genesis 31:6 is that Jacob had given his best effort in serving Laban.

When Jacob says, “with all my power,” he is describing wholehearted effort. The Hebrew expression behind this phrase carries the idea of strength, ability, capacity, and personal resources. The Hebrew verb translated “served” can refer to working, serving, or laboring.

Jacob was therefore saying, in effect, that he had not been lazy, careless, or irresponsible. He had used his strength and ability to fulfill his responsibilities.

1. “And ye know”

Jacob begins by saying, “And ye know.”

He was speaking to Rachel and Leah, who were Laban’s daughters. They were not strangers to the situation. They had witnessed Jacob’s years of labor and knew what had happened within their family.

This teaches an important principle: faithful work eventually becomes visible.

A person may sometimes feel that nobody notices his effort. People may overlook sacrifices, ignore long hours, or fail to appreciate honest service. Yet Genesis 31:6 reminds us that our work is not necessarily unseen simply because people do not praise us.

Jacob could confidently appeal to the knowledge of Rachel and Leah because they had seen his conduct.

2. “With all my power”

This is the heart of the verse.

Jacob did not say that he served Laban only when circumstances were easy. He says that he served him “with all my power.”

The phrase communicates wholehearted effort. It suggests giving one’s strength, ability, energy, and resources to the responsibility that has been entrusted to them.

This does not mean that a person must work beyond reasonable human limits. Rather, it emphasizes diligence instead of laziness and commitment instead of carelessness.

There is an important spiritual lesson here: when we accept a responsibility, we should try to fulfill it faithfully.

3. “I have served your father”

Jacob specifically refers to Laban as “your father.”

This wording is significant because the relationship between Jacob and Laban had become deeply strained. Laban had not always treated Jacob fairly, yet Jacob could still accurately describe the years he had spent working for him.

Genesis 31:7 immediately explains the problem: Jacob says that Laban had deceived him and changed his wages repeatedly, while God did not allow Laban’s actions to destroy Jacob. 

Therefore, Genesis 31:6 should be understood within the larger story. Jacob’s statement is not simply about employment. It is part of his explanation of why he was leaving Laban’s household.

The Context of Genesis 31:6

Genesis 31 describes the point at which Jacob’s relationship with Laban had deteriorated significantly. Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him had changed. He then called Rachel and Leah into the field and explained the situation.

Jacob reminded them that he had worked faithfully for their father. He also explained that Laban had repeatedly changed his wages.

Yet the passage emphasizes that God had been with Jacob. In the previous verse Jacob says that the God of his father had been with him, and in the following verses he describes how God protected him despite Laban’s behavior. 

This gives Genesis 31:6 a deeper meaning: faithful work and God’s providence are presented together.

Jacob worked diligently, but he also recognized that his ultimate protection and blessing came from God.

Faithfulness matters

Jacob’s example teaches the importance of being faithful in one’s responsibilities. Whether someone is working for an employer, serving a family, caring for others, or fulfilling a personal responsibility, diligence matters.

Do your best even when circumstances are difficult

Jacob was not working under ideal conditions. His employer repeatedly changed the terms of his wages. Yet Jacob continued to work diligently.

This does not mean that injustice should always be tolerated. Jacob eventually left Laban’s household when the time came. The lesson is that difficult circumstances should not automatically become an excuse for abandoning integrity.

God sees faithful labor

One of the strongest themes surrounding this verse is God’s awareness of Jacob’s situation. Laban might have acted unfairly, but God knew what was happening.

This can encourage anyone who feels unnoticed or undervalued. Human recognition is temporary, but God sees the heart, effort, motives, and circumstances behind a person’s work.

Hard work does not mean trusting human beings blindly

Genesis 31 also provides balance. Jacob worked faithfully, but he did not remain permanently trapped in an unhealthy arrangement.

Faithfulness does not require a person to accept endless exploitation. Jacob eventually followed God’s direction to return to his homeland. The passage therefore teaches both diligence and wise dependence upon God.

پیدائش 31:6 میں یعقوب اپنی بیویوں راحیل اور لیا سے کہتا ہے:

“And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.”

یعنی:

“اور تم جانتی ہو کہ میں نے اپنی پوری طاقت کے ساتھ تمہارے باپ کی خدمت کی ہے۔”

یہ آیت یعقوب کی محنت، وفاداری اور مسلسل خدمت کو ظاہر کرتی ہے۔
