Detailed English Explanation

“And when the days of his mourning were past”

The verse begins after a period of mourning. Joseph had experienced profound sorrow because of the death of his father, Jacob. Genesis 50 describes a lengthy period of mourning and preparation before Jacob’s burial.

This expression reminds us that grief is a real and serious part of human life. Joseph did not ignore his sorrow or pretend that the death of his father did not matter. He mourned deeply, and the people around him also recognized the seriousness of his loss.

At the same time, the words “when the days of his mourning were past” show that mourning eventually gives way to responsibility. Joseph still had duties to perform. He needed to make arrangements for his father’s burial according to Jacob’s wishes.

There is an important spiritual lesson here: sorrow may be part of our journey, but it does not remove every responsibility from our lives. There comes a time when we must continue forward while carrying the memory of those we have lost.

“Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh”

Joseph did not immediately go directly to Pharaoh. Instead, he spoke to members of Pharaoh’s household.

Joseph had considerable authority in Egypt. Yet his position did not make him arrogant or disrespectful. He understood the importance of proper procedure and approached the matter carefully.

This demonstrates Joseph’s wisdom. He knew how to communicate with people according to their position and circumstances. His behavior provides an example of respectful leadership.

Joseph’s life had changed dramatically. Years earlier, he had been sold by his brothers and taken to Egypt as a slave. Eventually, through God’s providence, he became a high-ranking ruler in Egypt. Nevertheless, Joseph continued to conduct himself with humility and wisdom.

“If now I have found grace in your eyes”

Joseph uses a respectful expression: “If now I have found grace in your eyes.”

He is asking for favor or goodwill. He does not demand that Pharaoh grant his request simply because Joseph holds an important position.

This language reflects humility and courtesy. Joseph understood that his request concerned an important royal matter, and he approached those around Pharaoh with respect.

The principle remains valuable today. Even when we have authority, influence, knowledge, or success, humility can help us communicate wisely with others.

“Speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh”

Joseph asks the members of Pharaoh’s household to present his request to Pharaoh.

The phrase “I pray you” expresses earnestness and politeness. Joseph is asking them to communicate his wishes carefully.

His approach is particularly meaningful because the matter involved leaving Egypt and traveling to Canaan for Jacob’s burial. Joseph wanted Pharaoh’s permission and cooperation.

Joseph could have used his political influence forcefully, but he chose respectful communication instead. His example demonstrates that strength and humility can exist together.

“Saying”

The verse ends by introducing the message that Joseph wanted communicated to Pharaoh. The following verse explains the specific request: Joseph wanted permission to fulfill the promise made to his father and bury Jacob in the land of Canaan.

Therefore, Genesis 50:4 functions as a transition. It prepares the reader for Joseph’s request and emphasizes the respectful manner in which he presented it.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 50:4

1. Grief should be treated seriously

Joseph’s mourning shows that sorrow after the loss of a loved one is not something to be ashamed of. Scripture presents Joseph as a strong and faithful man, yet he openly mourned his father.

Faith does not mean that a person never experiences sadness. It means that even in sorrow, a person can continue trusting God and fulfilling his responsibilities.

2. Humility is important in leadership

Joseph was one of the most powerful men in Egypt, but he still spoke respectfully. His position did not cause him to become proud.

True leadership is not merely about authority. It also involves wisdom, patience, humility, and consideration for others.

3. Respectful communication matters

Joseph carefully communicated his request rather than acting impulsively. His example teaches us to approach difficult situations with wisdom.

A respectful request can often accomplish more than an angry demand.

4. Joseph honored his father’s wishes

Joseph’s actions demonstrated his love and respect for Jacob. He remembered the promise made concerning Jacob’s burial and worked to fulfill it.

This reminds us of the importance of honoring our parents and remembering their meaningful instructions when those instructions are consistent with what is right.

5. God remains faithful through changing circumstances

Joseph’s life had passed through slavery, imprisonment, political advancement, family reconciliation, famine, and now bereavement. Through all these changes, God’s purposes continued.

Genesis 50 encourages readers to recognize that circumstances can change rapidly, but God’s purposes are not defeated by difficult seasons.
