Explanation in English
1. The brothers sat down to eat
Genesis 37:25 begins with the brothers sitting down to eat bread after putting Joseph into a pit. This detail makes the scene particularly serious. Joseph was their own brother, yet they were able to sit down and eat while he remained helpless in the pit.
The passage demonstrates how hatred can affect a person’s conscience. When anger and jealousy are allowed to grow, people can become capable of actions that they might once have considered impossible.
Joseph’s brothers were not strangers dealing with an enemy. Joseph was their brother and the son of their father Jacob. Their family relationship should have encouraged compassion, but jealousy had damaged their relationship.
2. A company of Ishmeelites appeared
While the brothers were together, they saw a company of Ishmeelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were carrying valuable goods such as spices, balm, and myrrh, and they were traveling toward Egypt.
Their arrival became a turning point in Joseph’s life.
Judah saw an opportunity. Instead of allowing Joseph to remain in the pit or killing him, he suggested selling him to the merchants.
Judah asked, “What profit is it if we slay our brother?”
His question reveals an important problem in his thinking. He was no longer primarily considering what was right or wrong; he was considering what they could gain from the situation.
Although selling Joseph avoided murder, it was still a terrible act of betrayal.
3. “He is our brother and our flesh”
Judah said, “for he is our brother and our flesh.”
These words are striking because Judah recognized Joseph’s family relationship while simultaneously participating in his sale.
This reminds us that recognizing someone as a family member is not enough. True love must be demonstrated through actions. A person may know that another human being deserves kindness and still choose to act selfishly.
The brothers had allowed jealousy to become stronger than brotherly love.
4. Joseph was sold for twenty pieces of silver
Genesis 37:28 states that Joseph was sold to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver.
Joseph’s brothers treated him as something that could be exchanged for money. The young man who had been part of their family was suddenly separated from his father, his home, and his familiar surroundings.
For Joseph, this must have been a devastating change. He was being taken to Egypt as a servant, with no control over where he was going or what would happen to him.
Yet the story of Joseph does not end in that pit or with his sale.
5. Joseph’s suffering was not the end of his story
One of the most important lessons from Joseph’s life is that a painful beginning does not necessarily determine the final outcome.
Joseph went from being loved by his father to being hated by his brothers. He went from the freedom of his home to slavery in Egypt. Later, his life would include additional injustice and imprisonment.
Nevertheless, God continued to work through Joseph’s circumstances.
The Bible later shows Joseph rising to an important position in Egypt. Through his position, Joseph would eventually help preserve many lives during a severe famine and would be reunited with his family.
The events of Genesis 37 therefore show only the beginning of a much larger story.
6. The danger of jealousy
Jealousy is one of the central themes surrounding Joseph’s brothers.
They had already become angry because Jacob loved Joseph especially. Joseph’s dreams also contributed to their resentment. Instead of dealing honestly with their feelings, the brothers allowed their jealousy to grow into hatred.
This provides a practical warning. Jealousy can begin with something small but become destructive when it is continually fed by anger, comparison, and resentment.
The proper response to jealousy is not revenge against the person who seems more successful or more loved. Instead, a person should examine the heart, practice gratitude, and seek peace.
7. Human wrongdoing does not cancel God’s providence
Genesis 37 does not describe the brothers’ actions as good. Their decision to sell Joseph was cruel and unjust.
At the same time, Joseph’s later life demonstrates that God could bring good purposes out of circumstances caused by human wrongdoing.
This is an important biblical distinction: God bringing good from a situation does not mean that the original wrongdoing was acceptable.
Joseph himself later recognized God’s greater purpose. His story teaches believers to trust God even when circumstances appear completely different from what they hoped or expected.
Urdu Explanation —
یہوداہ نے خود کہا، “for he is our brother and our flesh” یعنی یوسف ہمارا بھائی اور ہمارا اپنا گوشت ہے۔
