English Explanation

“And Israel said unto Joseph”

The name Israel refers to Jacob. God had given Jacob the name Israel after his encounter with God. At this point in Genesis, both names are used for him.

Jacob is speaking directly to Joseph, the son whom he had loved deeply. Their relationship had experienced a long and painful separation. Joseph had been taken away from his family and eventually brought to Egypt. For many years Jacob believed that Joseph had died.

Now Jacob is standing before Joseph and speaking with him again.

This scene is important because it shows that family separation does not necessarily have the final word. The story of Joseph contains betrayal, suffering, slavery, imprisonment, and hardship, but it eventually leads to reconciliation and restoration.

“I had not thought to see thy face”

Jacob’s statement expresses genuine surprise and gratitude.

Earlier in Joseph’s story, Jacob had been led to believe that Joseph was dead. His grief had been profound. For years he lived with the pain of losing his son.

Therefore, seeing Joseph alive was far beyond what Jacob expected.

The words “I had not thought to see thy face” communicate the difference between human expectation and what God can bring about. Jacob had stopped expecting a reunion, but the circumstances changed in a remarkable way.

This does not mean that every human desire will always happen exactly as someone hopes. Rather, the story shows that God’s providence can work through circumstances that people cannot foresee.

Joseph’s journey had seemed to move farther and farther away from his family. Yet the very events that appeared to destroy his future eventually brought him to Egypt, where he became an important instrument in preserving his family during famine.

“And, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed”

The word “seed” here refers to Joseph’s descendants, particularly his sons Ephraim and Manasseh.

Jacob is amazed that God has allowed him to see not only Joseph but also Joseph’s children.

This makes the moment even more meaningful. Jacob had feared losing Joseph permanently, but now he sees the continuation of Joseph’s family.

The statement gives glory to God. Jacob does not describe the reunion merely as an accident of circumstances. He recognizes God’s gracious provision.

There is also an important generational theme here. God had made promises concerning Jacob’s descendants, and Joseph’s sons were part of the growing family through which those promises would continue.

Joseph Brings His Sons Before Jacob

Genesis 48:12 says:

“And Joseph brought them out from between his knees…”

This describes Joseph bringing Ephraim and Manasseh forward so that Jacob could bless them.

The scene takes place in the context of Jacob’s final days. Jacob knows that his life is coming to an end, and he wants to speak blessings over his descendants.

This shows the importance of family and spiritual inheritance in Genesis. The older generation passes blessings and promises to the younger generation.

“And he bowed himself with his face to the earth”

Joseph bows himself before Jacob.

His posture demonstrates humility, respect, and honor. Joseph had become extremely powerful in Egypt, but his authority did not cause him to forget his father.

This is especially meaningful because Joseph had risen to a position where many people depended upon him. Nevertheless, when he comes before his aged father, he behaves with humility.

The passage therefore provides an example of respecting parents and honoring family relationships.

Joseph’s greatness did not remove his need for humility.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 48:11–12

1. God can bring unexpected restoration

Jacob did not expect to see Joseph again, yet God allowed him to see Joseph and Joseph’s children.

The story reminds believers that human beings do not know everything about the future. Difficult circumstances may change in ways that cannot be predicted.

2. God deserves gratitude for blessings

Jacob specifically recognizes God when he says that God had shown him Joseph’s children.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: when unexpected blessings come, they should lead to gratitude rather than pride.

3. Family relationships are valuable

Jacob’s reunion with Joseph demonstrates the importance of family love and reconciliation.

Their story had included years of separation, but the final chapters of Genesis emphasize their restored relationship.

4. Humility is important even after success

Joseph had achieved great authority in Egypt. Yet he bowed before his father.

His position did not make him arrogant. His actions demonstrate that success and humility can exist together.

5. Blessings can extend across generations

Jacob was not thinking only about himself. He was concerned about Joseph’s children and their future.

The passage points toward the importance of teaching, blessing, guiding, and caring for the next generation.

Urdu Explanation

“And Israel said unto Joseph”

“I had not thought to see thy face”

“God hath shewed me also thy seed”

“He bowed himself with his face to the earth”
