English Explanation

The statement, “This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh,” connects Joseph’s interpretation with what he had already explained about Pharaoh’s dreams. Joseph wanted Pharaoh to understand that the two dreams had one united message. They were communicating something important about Egypt’s future.

The central statement is:

“What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh.”

Joseph recognized that God was revealing future events to Pharaoh. The dreams were connected with seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. God was giving Pharaoh advance knowledge so that Egypt could prepare for the difficult years that were coming.

This teaches us that God is sovereign over history. The coming famine was not presented as an event outside His knowledge. God already knew what would happen, and He allowed Pharaoh to receive a warning before the crisis arrived.

1. God Reveals What He Is About to Do

The verse emphasizes God’s ability to reveal future events according to His purpose. Pharaoh did not understand the dreams himself, and his magicians could not explain them. Joseph explained that the answer came from God.

This is significant because Joseph had spent years in difficult circumstances. He had been separated from his family, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned. Yet God had continued working through his life.

When Joseph finally stood before Pharaoh, he did not take personal glory for the interpretation. His words directed attention to God.

The passage therefore presents Joseph as a servant through whom God provided important information.

2. Joseph Gives God the Credit

One of the strongest lessons in Genesis 41:28 is Joseph’s humility. Joseph had the ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, but he did not claim that the wisdom originated with himself.

Earlier in the chapter, Joseph had already told Pharaoh that the interpretation belonged to God. His response shows that he understood his position correctly: he was the messenger, while God was the ultimate source of the revelation.

This is an important lesson for anyone who receives wisdom, opportunity, knowledge, or success. Joseph’s example shows the importance of recognizing God rather than taking all the credit for ourselves.

3. God Gives a Warning Before the Crisis

The dreams revealed both prosperity and famine. Egypt would experience seven years of extraordinary abundance, followed by seven years of severe famine.

The warning was important because the coming abundance provided an opportunity to prepare. If Egypt understood the message and acted wisely, food could be stored during the years of plenty.

This demonstrates that a warning can also be an expression of mercy. The purpose of revealing the future was not simply to frighten Pharaoh. It provided an opportunity for responsible preparation.

Joseph would later recommend a practical plan for storing grain during the abundant years. Therefore, God’s revelation was connected with action.

4. God’s Revelation Has a Purpose

Genesis 41:28 does not present God’s revelation as information given merely to satisfy curiosity. The revelation had a practical purpose.

Pharaoh needed to know what was coming so that Egypt could prepare. The interpretation eventually led to Joseph receiving authority to organize the collection and storage of grain.

The passage therefore connects revelation, wisdom, preparation, and responsibility.

Knowing something about what is coming should lead to wise action. In this story, the information about the future became the foundation for a plan that would preserve food during the famine.

5. Joseph’s Difficult Past Had Not Been Forgotten

Genesis 41 also demonstrates that difficult circumstances do not mean that God has abandoned His purposes.

Joseph had spent years in circumstances that seemed to move him farther away from the position God had prepared for him. Yet his experiences had prepared him for the responsibility that eventually came.

His knowledge, integrity, patience, and ability to interpret dreams became important when Pharaoh needed help.

Genesis 41:28 therefore fits into the larger story of God’s providence in Joseph’s life. What appeared to be a series of unrelated difficulties was eventually connected with a much larger purpose.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 41:28

God Knows the Future

The verse reminds readers that God knows what is ahead. Human beings have limited knowledge, but God is presented as having complete awareness of future events.

Give God the Credit

Joseph did not use his gift to make himself the center of attention. He pointed Pharaoh toward God. His example encourages humility when we receive abilities or opportunities.

Warnings Should Lead to Preparation

The coming famine was revealed before it happened. The proper response was preparation rather than panic. The story encourages wisdom, planning, and responsible action.

Difficult Seasons Can Have a Larger Purpose

Joseph’s life shows that a difficult chapter does not necessarily represent the end of God’s work. His years of hardship eventually became part of the circumstances that brought him before Pharaoh.

God Can Work Through Unexpected People

Pharaoh’s official advisers could not explain the dreams, but Joseph, a Hebrew prisoner who had been brought from difficult circumstances, was able to provide the interpretation through God’s wisdom.
