English Explanation
Genesis 47:2 describes an important moment in the story of Joseph, Jacob, and the family of Israel. Joseph had risen to a position of great authority in Egypt, and because of the severe famine, his family had come from Canaan to Egypt seeking food and a place to live. Joseph now brought five of his brothers before Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt.
The verse is short, but it is part of a larger event that demonstrates Joseph’s wisdom, humility, family responsibility, and the remarkable way God had guided his life.
Joseph Brings Five of His Brothers Before Pharaoh
The verse begins, “And he took some of his brethren, even five men.” Joseph did not bring all of his brothers before Pharaoh at this particular moment. Instead, he selected five of them.
The following verses explain why they were brought before Pharaoh. Joseph had already told his family that Pharaoh would ask about their occupation. Their answer was important because their profession was connected with livestock. Joseph had instructed them to explain honestly that they had been shepherds and cattle keepers.
Joseph’s brothers were entering a completely different environment. They had come from the land of Canaan into the powerful Egyptian court. Pharaoh was the highest authority in Egypt, and appearing before him would have been a serious occasion.
Joseph therefore acted as an intermediary between his family and Pharaoh. Because Joseph knew the Egyptian court, he could help his family understand how to approach Pharaoh respectfully and answer his questions appropriately.
Joseph’s Position and Responsibility
Joseph’s position makes this event especially meaningful. Years earlier, his brothers had rejected him and sold him into slavery. Joseph eventually suffered greatly in Egypt, including imprisonment. Yet God had raised him from slavery and imprisonment to become a leading administrator in Egypt.
Now those same brothers stood before him because they needed his help.
This shows an important theme in the Joseph narrative: circumstances can change dramatically, but God can continue working through them. Joseph did not use his authority to destroy his brothers. Instead, he used his position to preserve his family during the famine.
Genesis 47:2 therefore belongs to a larger story about providence, reconciliation, family responsibility, and God’s purposes.
Pharaoh Meets Joseph’s Family
Joseph’s brothers were presented to Pharaoh because Joseph wanted to establish their situation openly before the Egyptian ruler. They were not secretly brought into the land. Their presence and occupation were explained to Pharaoh.
This was significant because Egypt was going through a severe famine. Joseph’s family needed somewhere to live and food for their households and livestock. Pharaoh had already welcomed Joseph’s father and family because of his confidence in Joseph.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Pharaoh to hear directly from Joseph’s brothers about who they were and what they did.
A Lesson About Honesty
The surrounding passage emphasizes truthful communication. Joseph had instructed his brothers to identify themselves as shepherds and to explain that they had come to Egypt because the famine had affected the land of Canaan.
This teaches the importance of honesty when entering a new situation. Joseph did not tell his brothers to invent an impressive occupation. He encouraged them to speak truthfully about their actual work.
For believers, this can serve as a practical lesson: integrity matters even when speaking to powerful people. A person’s value does not depend upon pretending to be something different from what they really are.
God’s Providence in Joseph’s Life
Genesis 47:2 also reminds readers of the extraordinary journey Joseph had experienced.
Joseph had once been separated from his family. His brothers had sold him, and he eventually became a slave in Egypt. His circumstances seemed completely different from the promises and dreams associated with his youth.
But over time, Joseph became a leader in Egypt. His wisdom in preparing for the famine saved countless lives.
Now his family had come to Egypt because of that famine.
The circumstances that once appeared to be disasters became part of a much larger story. Joseph’s position in Egypt allowed him to provide food and protection for his father, brothers, and their households.
This does not mean that suffering itself was good. Rather, the story shows that God can work through difficult circumstances and bring about purposes that people could not see at the beginning.
Joseph’s Family Receives a Place in Egypt
The events surrounding Genesis 47 eventually lead to Jacob and his household receiving permission to settle in the land of Egypt, particularly in Goshen.
This was important for the survival of the family. They had come to Egypt because of famine, but their settlement there became a significant stage in the history of the descendants of Jacob.
The five brothers standing before Pharaoh were therefore part of a much larger historical development. What looked like a simple royal meeting had consequences for generations to come.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 47:2
There are several lessons that can be drawn from this passage.
1. God can work through unexpected circumstances.
Joseph’s life changed from favored son to slave, from prisoner to administrator. His difficult experiences eventually placed him in a position where he could help his family.
2. Authority should be used responsibly.
Joseph had tremendous authority, but he used it to protect and provide for others rather than to seek revenge.
3. Honesty is valuable.
Joseph’s brothers were instructed to speak truthfully about their occupation and circumstances.
4. Family responsibility matters.
Joseph did not abandon his family after becoming powerful. He continued to care for his father and brothers.
5. Human plans are not always the whole story.
The brothers had made terrible choices concerning Joseph, but their actions did not prevent God’s larger purpose from unfolding.
“And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.”
“And he took some of his brethren, even five men.”
