Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Verse 1

Verse: Simon Peter a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ

  • English Explanation: Peter begins his letter by identifying himself as both a servant (bondslave) and an apostle. This establishes a balance of humility and divine authority. He addresses believers who have received the exact same “precious faith” as the apostles. This faith is not earned by human merit but is granted through the righteousness of Jesus Christ, affirming Jesus’ equality and unity with God the Father as Savior.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس اس خط کا آغاز خود کو یسوع مسیح کا خادم اور رسول ظاہر کر کے کرتا ہے۔ یہ اس کی عاجزی اور خداوندی اختیار کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ وہ ان ایمان داروں کو مخاطب کر رہا ہے جنہیں رسولوں کی مانند “قیمتی ایمان” ملا ہے۔ یہ ایمان کسی انسانی خوبی کی وجہ سے نہیں بلکہ خدا اور ہمارے منجی یسوع مسیح کی راستبازی کے وسیلے ملا ہے جو یسوع کی الٰہیات اور نجات دہندہ ہونے کی تصدیق کرتا ہے۔

Verse 2

Verse: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord

  • English Explanation: Peter prays for an abundance of grace and peace upon the readers. Crucially, he states that this spiritual multiplication comes “through the knowledge” (epignosis—a deep, experiential knowledge) of God and Jesus. True peace and grace grow as our relational understanding of Christ deepens, protecting believers from false teachings.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس دعا کرتا ہے کہ پڑھنے والوں پر فضل اور اطمینان کثرت سے ہوتا رہے۔ وہ واضح کرتا ہے کہ یہ روحانی برکت خدا اور ہمارے خداوند یسوع کی “پہچان” (گہرے اور ذاتی تجرباتی علم) کے وسیلے حاصل ہوتی ہے۔ حقیقی اطمینان اور فضل اس وقت بڑھتا ہے جب مسیح کے ساتھ ہمارا رشتہ گہرا ہوتا ہے جو ہمیں گمراہ کن تعلیمات سے بچاتا ہے۔

Verse 3

Verse: According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue

  • English Explanation: God’s divine power has already provided believers with absolutely everything required to live a holy life and maintain godliness. We lack nothing. This provision is unlocked through our personal knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and moral excellence (virtue).

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا کی الٰہی قدرت نے ہمیں وہ سب کچھ پہلے ہی دے دیا ہے جو زندگی اور دینداری کے لیے ضروری ہے۔ ہمارے پاس کسی چیز کی کمی نہیں ہے۔ یہ سب کچھ ہمیں اس کی پہچان کے وسیلے ملتا ہے جس نے ہمیں اپنے جلال اور نیکی (عمدہ صفات) کے ذریعے بلایا ہے۔

Verse 4

Verse: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust

  • English Explanation: Through Christ’s glory and virtue, God has given us immense and invaluable promises. The purpose of these promises is twofold: to allow believers to share or partake in the “divine nature” (becoming more like Christ in character) and to escape the moral decay and corruption ruling the world due to sinful desires.

  • Urdu Explanation: مسیح کے جلال کے وسیلے خدا نے ہمیں نہایت ہی بڑے اور قیمتی وعدے دیے ہیں۔ ان وعدوں کا مقصد دوہرا ہے: ایک یہ کہ ایمان دار “الٰہی فطرت” میں شریک ہوں (کردار میں مسیح کی مانند بنیں) اور دوسرا یہ کہ وہ اس خرابی اور پاکیزگی کی کمی سے بچ سکیں جو دنیا میں بری خواہشات کی وجہ سے پھیلی ہوئی ہے۔

Verse 5

Verse: And beside this giving all diligence add to your faith virtue and to virtue knowledge

  • English Explanation: Because God has equipped us (verses 3-4), believers must apply maximum effort (“giving all diligence”) to grow. Faith is the foundation, but it cannot stand alone. To faith, we must deliberately add moral excellence (virtue), and to virtue, we must add a deeper understanding of God’s truth (knowledge).

  • Urdu Explanation: چونکہ خدا نے ہمیں ہر چیز سے لیس کر دیا ہے (آیات ۳۔۴) ، اس لیے ایمان داروں کو بڑھنے کے لیے پوری کوشش (“نہایت سرگرمی”) کرنی چاہیے۔ ایمان بنیاد ہے، لیکن یہ اکیلا نہیں رہ سکتا۔ ایمان پر نیکی (اعلیٰ کردار) کا اضافہ کرو، اور نیکی پر خدا کی سچائی کا علم بڑھاؤ۔

Verse 6

Verse: And to knowledge temperance and to temperance patience and to patience godliness

  • English Explanation: Spiritual growth continues like building blocks. To knowledge, the believer must add self-control (temperance). Self-control must lead to steadfast endurance (patience) under trials. This patience builds a lifestyle centered on honoring God (godliness).

  • Urdu Explanation: روحانی ترقی کا یہ سلسلہ بلاکس کی طرح آگے بڑھتا ہے۔ علم پر پرہیزگاری (اپنے جذبات پر قابو پانا) بڑھاؤ، پرہیزگاری پر صبر (آزمائشوں میں ثابت قدمی) اور صبر پر دینداری (خدا ترس زندگی) قائم کرو۔

Verse 7

Verse: And to godliness brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness charity

  • English Explanation: Godliness is not detached; it manifests in relationships. Believers must add brotherly affection (philadelphia) toward church community members, and ultimately crown it with unconditional, sacrificial love (agape) for all people.

  • Urdu Explanation: دینداری الگ تھلگ رہنے کا نام نہیں بلکہ یہ رشتوں میں ظاہر ہوتی ہے۔ دینداری پر برادرانہ محبت (آپس کی محبت) اور برادرانہ محبت پر الٰہی محبت (بغیر کسی شرط کے قربانی والی محبت) بڑھاؤ جو تمام انسانوں کے لیے ہو۔

Verse 8

Verse: For if these things be in you and abound they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ

  • English Explanation: If these eight qualities (faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, love) are present and increasing, they ensure that a believer’s spiritual life is highly productive and active, bringing genuine fruit from their knowledge of Jesus.

  • Urdu Explanation: اگر یہ صفات (ایمان، نیکی، علم، پرہیزگاری، صبر، دینداری، برادرانہ محبت، اور محبت) آپ میں موجود ہوں اور بڑھتی رہیں، تو یہ آپ کی روحانی زندگی کو کارآمد اور پھلدار بنائیں گی، اور آپ خداوند یسوع مسیح کی پہچان میں بیکار نہیں رہیں گے۔

Verse 9

Verse: But he that lacketh these things is blind and cannot see afar off and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins

  • English Explanation: Anyone who fails to develop these qualities is spiritually near-sighted or blind. Such a person lives in spiritual amnesia, forgetting the incredible reality that Jesus washed away their past sins, leading to stagnation.

  • Urdu Explanation: جس شخص میں یہ صفات نہیں پاتیں وہ روحانی طور پر اندھا یا دھندلا دیکھنے والا ہے۔ ایسا انسان روحانی نسیان (بھولنے کی بیماری) کا شکار ہے اور یہ بھول چکا ہے کہ یسوع نے اس کے پچھلے گناہوں کو دھو کر اسے پاک کیا تھا، جس کی وجہ سے اس کی روحانی ترقی رک جاتی ہے۔

Verse 10

Verse: Wherefore the rather brethren give diligence to make your calling and election sure for if ye do these things ye shall never fall

  • English Explanation: Therefore, believers should be even more eager to confirm that God has truly called and chosen them. This assurance is not earned, but it is demonstrated by living out the qualities mentioned earlier. Practicing these virtues keeps a believer secure from stumbling away from God.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس لیے اے بھائیو، اپنے بلائے جانے اور چنے جانے کو قائم رکھنے کے لیے زیادہ سرگرمی دکھاؤ۔ یہ یقین محنت سے کمایا نہیں جاتا بلکہ مذکورہ بالا صفات پر عمل کرنے سے ثابت ہوتا ہے۔ ان خوبیوں پر عمل پیرا رہنے سے انسان کبھی ٹھوکر نہیں کھائے گا۔

Verse 11

Verse: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

  • English Explanation: Living a diligent, fruitful Christian life leads to a triumphant finish. God will grandly and generously welcome such believers into the eternal, everlasting kingdom of Jesus Christ, providing an abundant entrance rather than barely escaping judgment.

  • Urdu Explanation: ایک سرگرم اور پھلدار مسیحی زندگی گزارنے کا انجام شاندار ہوتا ہے۔ خدا ایسے ایمان داروں کو اپنے خداوند اور منجی یسوع مسیح کی ابدی بادشاہی میں بڑی شان اور کثرت کے ساتھ داخلہ عطا فرمائے گا، نہ کہ وہ بمشکل نجات پائیں گے۔

Verse 12

Verse: Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things though ye know them and be established in the present truth

  • English Explanation: Even though the readers already know these spiritual realities and are firmly grounded in the truth, Peter emphasizes that he will never stop reminding them. Repetition is necessary to protect believers from complacency and drift.

  • Urdu Explanation: اگرچہ پڑھنے والے ان روحانی حقائق کو پہلے سے جانتے ہیں اور اس سچائی پر قائم ہیں، پھر بھی پطرس اس بات پر زور دیتا ہے کہ وہ انہیں ان باتوں کی یاد دلانے میں کبھی غفلت نہیں کرے گا۔ ایمان داروں کو سستی اور بھٹک جانے سے بچانے کے لیے بار بار یاد دہانی ضروری ہے۔

Verse 13

Verse: Yea I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle to stir you up by putting you in remembrance

  • English Explanation: Peter considers it his vital, God-given duty as long as he lives in “this tabernacle” (a metaphor for his temporary earthly body) to keep waking up and stirring up the believers’ minds through constant reminders.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس اسے اپنا اہم اور الٰہی فرض سمجھتا ہے کہ جب تک وہ “اس خیمے” (اپنے عارضی انسانی جسم کے لیے استعارہ) میں ہے، وہ ایمان داروں کو یاد دلا دلا کر ان کے ذہنوں کو بیدار اور چوکنا رکھے۔

Verse 14

Verse: Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me

  • English Explanation: Peter writes with urgency because he knows his earthly death (“putting off this tabernacle”) is approaching quickly. This echoes the prophecy Jesus gave him at the Sea of Galilee (John 21:18-19) regarding his martyrdom.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس اس خط کو بڑی عجلت کے ساتھ لکھ رہا ہے کیونکہ وہ جانتا ہے کہ اس کی زمینی موت (“اس خیمے کو گرایا جانا”) قریب ہے۔ یہ بات اس پیشگوئی کی یاد دلاتی ہے جو یسوع نے گلیل کی جھیل پر اس کی شہادت کے بارے میں کی تھی (یوحنا ۲۱: ۱۸۔۱۹)۔

Verse 15

Verse: Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance

  • English Explanation: Peter is taking care to write these truths down so that after his departure (death), the church will have a permanent, reliable record to look back on, ensuring the gospel survives his generation.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس ان حقائق کو تحریری شکل دینے کی کوشش کر رہا ہے تاکہ اس کے رحلت (وفات) کر جانے کے بعد بھی کلیسیا کے پاس ایک مستقل اور قابل اعتماد ریکارڈ موجود رہے، اور انجیل کی تعلیم اگلی نسلوں تک محفوظ رہے۔

Verse 16

Verse: For we have not followed cunningly devised fables when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ but were eyewitnesses of his majesty

  • English Explanation: The gospel message is not built on clever myths, legends, or man-made stories. Peter defends the apostolic message by declaring that he and the other apostles were literal, physical eyewitnesses of Jesus Christ’s divine majesty and glory.

  • Urdu Explanation: مسیحی پیغام کسی چالاکی سے گھڑی ہوئی کہانیوں، دیومالائی قصوں یا انسانی من گھڑت باتوں پر مبنی نہیں ہے۔ پطرس رسولوں کے پیغام کا دفاع کرتے ہوئے اعلان کرتا ہے کہ وہ اور دیگر رسول خود اپنی آنکھوں سے خداوند یسوع مسیح کے جلال اور عظمت کے گواہ تھے۔

Verse 17

Verse: For he received from God the Father honour and glory when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased

  • English Explanation: Peter points to a specific historical event to prove Christ’s majesty: the Transfiguration. He witnessed Jesus receive profound honor and glory directly from God the Father, accompanied by the audible divine voice declaring Jesus as His dearly loved and pleasing Son.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس مسیح کی عظمت کو ثابت کرنے کے لیے ایک خاص تاریخی واقعے کا ذکر کرتا ہے: یعنی تبدیلِ صورت کا واقعہ۔ اس نے خود دیکھا کہ یسوع نے خدا باپ سے عزت اور جلال پایا، جب آسمانی جلال سے یہ آواز آئی: “یہ میرا پیارا بیٹا ہے جس سے میں خوش ہوں”۔

Verse 18

Verse: And this voice which came from heaven we heard when we were with him in the holy mount

  • English Explanation: Peter validates his testimony by asserting physical reality: he, James, and John heard this actual voice booming from heaven with their own human ears while standing alongside Jesus on that sacred mountain.

  • Urdu Explanation: پطرس اپنی گواہی کی تصدیق مادی حقیقت سے کرتا ہے: یعنی اس نے، یعقوب اور یوحنا نے خود اپنے کانوں سے آسمان سے آتی ہوئی یہ آواز سنی جب وہ اس مقدس پہاڑ پر یسوع کے ساتھ موجود تھے۔

Verse 19

Verse: We have also a more sure word of prophecy whereunto ye do well that ye take heed as unto a light that shineth in a dark place until the day dawn and the day star arise in your hearts

  • English Explanation: As amazing as the Transfiguration was, Peter says we have something even more reliable: Old Testament prophecy fulfilled in Christ. Believers must pay close attention to Scripture because it acts like a lamp shining in a spiritually dark world, guiding us until Christ returns (the day star) and fully illuminates our lives.

  • Urdu Explanation: تبدیلِ صورت کا واقعہ جتنا بھی شاندار تھا، پطرس کہتا ہے کہ ہمارے پاس اس سے بھی زیادہ معتبر چیز موجود ہے: یعنی انبیاء کا کلام (پیشگوئیاں) جو مسیح میں پورا ہوا۔ ایمان داروں کو کلامِ مقدس پر پورا دھیان دینا چاہیے کیونکہ یہ اس تاریک دنیا میں ایک چمکتے ہوئے چراغ کی مانند ہے جو مسیح کی آمدِ ثانی (صبح کے ستارے) تک ہماری رہنمائی کرتا ہے۔

Verse 20

Verse: Knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation

  • English Explanation: A fundamental rule of studying Scripture is understanding that no biblical prophecy originated from a prophet’s own personal thoughts, opinions, or private insights. Scripture is not open to arbitrary, subjective human twists.

  • Urdu Explanation: کلامِ مقدس کے مطالعے کا بنیادی اصول یہ سمجھنا ہے کہ کتابِ مقدس کی کوئی بھی پیشگوئی کسی نبی کی ذاتی سوچ، رائے یا ذاتی تشریح کا نتیجہ نہیں ہے۔ کلام کو انسان اپنی مرضی سے توڑ مروڑ نہیں سکتا۔

Verse 21

Verse: For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

  • English Explanation: True prophecy never came because a human being wanted to speak for God. Instead, holy men of God wrote and spoke divine truths only as they were carried along, inspired, and directed by the power of the Holy Spirit. This guarantees the divine authority of the Bible.

  • Urdu Explanation: حقیقی پیشگوئی کبھی بھی انسان کی اپنی مرضی سے پیدا نہیں ہوئی۔ بلکہ خدا کے پاک لوگ روح القدس کی تحریک (اور اس کی رہنمائی) کے زیرِ اثر بولتے اور لکھتے تھے۔ یہی بات بائبل مقدس کے الٰہی اور مستند ہونے کی ضامن ہے۔
