Genesis 24:11 — English Explanation

Genesis 24:11 is an important verse in the story of Abraham’s servant who was sent to find a wife for Isaac. Abraham had entrusted his servant with a serious responsibility: to travel to his relatives’ region and find a suitable wife for his son Isaac. The servant therefore began his journey with camels and provisions and eventually arrived near the city.

The verse describes the servant’s arrival at an important moment. He stopped outside the city beside a well of water, and he made his camels kneel down. The timing was evening, specifically the time when women normally went out to draw water. The following verses show that this location and timing became central to the servant’s prayer and to the meeting with Rebekah.

1. “He made his camels to kneel down”

The camels had traveled a considerable distance, carrying the servant and supplies. Making them kneel was a practical act of rest. Camels commonly kneel when they are being loaded, unloaded, or allowed to rest.

This detail also shows that the servant was thinking carefully about the needs of the animals and the practical circumstances of the journey. His mission was spiritual and personal, but it also involved ordinary responsibilities such as caring for the animals.

The verse therefore combines faith with practical action. The servant did not simply wait for an answer without doing anything. He arrived at a suitable place, stopped the camels, and prepared for what would happen next.

2. “Without the city”

The expression “without the city” means outside the city. The servant did not immediately enter the city. Instead, he stopped near a well outside it.

In the ancient setting, wells were extremely important because water was essential for people and animals. A well could naturally become a gathering place, especially when people came to obtain water for their households.

The location therefore provided the servant with an opportunity to encounter people from the city without having to enter the city first.

3. “By a well of water”

Water is a central practical feature of this scene. The servant’s camels needed water after their journey, and the people of the city also needed water for daily life.

The well was therefore a logical meeting place. Genesis 24:13 immediately connects the servant’s position at the well with the arrival of the daughters of the men of the city who came to draw water.

This setting prepares the reader for the servant’s prayer. He asks God for guidance and proposes a specific indication involving a young woman who would offer not only him water but also water for his camels.

4. “At the time of the evening”

The verse specifically identifies the time as evening. This was not merely an unnecessary detail. The timing explains why the women were arriving at the well.

The passage indicates that evening was a customary time for women to go out and draw water. Other biblical passages also associate women going to wells with drawing water, including Exodus 2:16 and 1 Samuel 9:11.

Thus, the servant selected a location and arrived at a time when he would naturally encounter the people he needed to meet.

5. “The time that women go out to draw water”

This final phrase provides the immediate context for what happens next. The servant was waiting at the well at the very time when the women came to collect water.

His decision was therefore both practical and purposeful. He knew that the well was a place where people from the city would come, and he arrived at an appropriate time.

The next verses reveal the servant’s prayer. He asks God to show kindness to Abraham and proposes a test of character: the young woman he approaches should willingly offer him water and also volunteer to water his camels. Rebekah then appears before he has finished speaking.

6. Faith, patience, and preparation

One of the strongest lessons from Genesis 24:11 is the relationship between faith and preparation.

The servant trusted God, but he also acted responsibly. He traveled to the correct region, stopped at a sensible location, rested the camels, and waited at a time when people would naturally arrive.

This teaches an important principle: faith does not necessarily mean passive waiting. A person can pray for God’s guidance while simultaneously taking wise and responsible steps.

7. A setting prepared for an important encounter

Genesis 24:11 is a short verse, but it establishes the scene for one of the most significant meetings in the chapter. The well, the evening hour, the camels, and the women coming to draw water all become part of the unfolding story.

The servant’s arrival at the well leads directly into his prayer in verse 12 and his request for a clear indication in verses 13–14. Rebekah’s appearance in verse 15 then begins the answer to that prayer.

For this reason, Genesis 24:11 can be understood as a verse about arrival, preparation, prayer, and divine guidance.

Genesis 24:11 KJV

“And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.”
