Detailed English Explanation

“Fulfil her week”

The expression “Fulfil her week” refers to completing the week associated with Leah’s marriage. In the context of the passage, the “week” is understood as the period of the wedding celebration rather than another seven-year period. Other translations make this clearer by describing it as the daughter’s bridal or wedding week.

Laban was essentially telling Jacob that he should first complete the customary marriage celebration with Leah. After that period, Rachel would also be given to Jacob as a wife.

This detail is important because the verse does not mean that Jacob had to wait another seven years before receiving Rachel. Instead, Jacob received Rachel after completing Leah’s wedding week, while agreeing to work an additional seven years for Laban.

“And we will give thee this also”

The phrase “this also” refers to Rachel. Jacob’s original desire had been to marry Rachel, and he had already served Laban for seven years because of his love for her.

Laban’s arrangement meant that Jacob would eventually have Rachel as well, but only under the condition that he continue working for Laban.

Genesis 29:28 confirms that Jacob followed the arrangement: after completing Leah’s week, Laban gave Rachel to Jacob as a wife. Jacob then served Laban another seven years.

“For the service which thou shalt serve with me”

The word “service” refers to Jacob’s labor for Laban. Jacob had already spent seven years working for Laban. Now he was expected to work another seven years.

This makes the passage a significant part of Jacob’s life story. His years of service were connected with his marriages and his relationship with Laban.

Jacob’s experience also demonstrates that human plans do not always unfold in the way people expect. Jacob wanted Rachel and expected his seven years of labor to lead directly to his marriage with her. Instead, he encountered an unexpected situation involving Leah.

“Yet seven other years”

The phrase “seven other years” means another seven years of work. The arrangement required Jacob to continue serving Laban after receiving Rachel.

Genesis 29:30 states that Jacob served Laban for these additional seven years. The passage also says that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah.

The number seven is therefore repeated in Jacob’s story: he initially worked seven years for Rachel, and then he worked another seven years under Laban’s arrangement.

Main Lessons from Genesis 29:27

Genesis 29:27 can be considered from several perspectives.

First, the verse teaches about perseverance. Jacob had already worked seven years, but circumstances required him to continue. Despite disappointment and difficulty, he remained committed to the arrangement.

Second, the passage illustrates the complexity of human relationships. Laban’s actions created significant tension within the family. Jacob’s marriages to Leah and Rachel also became the beginning of complicated family relationships that continued throughout the Genesis narrative.

Third, the passage reminds readers that actions have consequences. Laban’s deception affected Jacob, Leah, Rachel, and eventually the wider family. The story demonstrates how one person’s decision can influence many lives.

Fourth, the passage provides historical and cultural context. Laban’s statement about the firstborn daughter helps explain why Leah was given before Rachel. The ancient marriage customs described in the narrative are important for understanding why the events happened as they did.

Spiritual Reflection

Genesis 29:27 is not simply a verse about seven years of labor. It appears within a larger story about God’s purposes working through imperfect people and difficult circumstances.

Jacob had his own history of deception and difficult family relationships. Now he himself experienced deception from Laban. The narrative shows that people may encounter situations they did not expect, even when they have worked toward a particular goal for a long time.

For readers today, the passage can encourage patience and faithfulness during difficult circumstances. It also encourages careful consideration of how our decisions affect other people.

The verse should not be interpreted as saying that every form of unfair treatment should simply be accepted. Rather, it belongs to a historical narrative that records what happened in Jacob’s family. The broader story eventually shows how God continued to work through these complicated circumstances.

“Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.”
King James Version

“Fulfil her week”

“We will give thee this also” کا مطلب
