Detailed Explanation in English

1. “And their words”

The phrase refers to the words spoken by Jacob’s sons immediately before this verse. Their proposal was not simply an ordinary marriage arrangement. They had established circumcision as a condition for continuing negotiations and for the two communities to live together.

The preceding verses make the condition clear: if the men of Shechem would become circumcised, Jacob’s family would agree to intermarriage and peaceful settlement; otherwise, they would leave.

Therefore, when Genesis 34:18 says “their words,” the reader should understand that it means the proposal and conditions presented by Dinah’s brothers.

2. “pleased Hamor”

Hamor was Shechem’s father and appears to have regarded the proposed arrangement favorably. The verse indicates that he was willing to accept the conditions presented by Jacob’s sons.

The idea expressed by the Hebrew wording is that the proposal was considered good or acceptable in their eyes. This does not necessarily mean that Hamor understood every hidden intention behind the proposal. Rather, the narrative shows that he found the arrangement agreeable enough to proceed with it.

This becomes important because the following verses show Hamor and Shechem going to the gate of their city and speaking to the men there about the proposal.

3. “and Shechem Hamor’s son”

Shechem himself was especially interested in the arrangement because of his desire for Dinah. The next verse explains that he did not delay in carrying out what had been requested because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter.

Thus, the response of Shechem is connected directly to his personal desire to marry Dinah. His motivation was therefore different from the broader social and economic considerations that Hamor later presented to the men of the city.

4. What happened after verse 18?

Genesis 34:19 says that Shechem did not delay in doing what had been requested. Hamor and Shechem then went to the gate of their city and spoke with the men there.

Their argument included several practical benefits. They presented Jacob’s family as peaceful neighbors and suggested that the two groups could live, trade, intermarry, and become one people. They also emphasized the material benefits that could come from the arrangement.

The men of the city accepted Hamor and Shechem’s proposal. The narrative then says that every male of the city was circumcised.

However, the story takes a tragic and violent turn afterward. On the third day, when the men were suffering from the effects of circumcision, Simeon and Levi attacked the city. Hamor and Shechem were killed, along with the other males of the city.

5. Why is Genesis 34:18 important?

Although Genesis 34:18 is a very short verse, it serves as a transition in the story. It shows that the proposal made by Jacob’s sons was accepted by the two men who were most directly involved.

The verse also demonstrates how quickly the situation developed. Shechem wanted Dinah, Hamor wanted an arrangement between the families, and Jacob’s sons presented a condition. Hamor and Shechem accepted that condition, and events quickly moved toward a much larger agreement involving the entire city.

The verse should therefore be read together with verses 15–24 rather than treated as an isolated statement.

Important Moral and Spiritual Lessons

Wisdom about motives

Genesis 34 presents people whose outward words and inward motives are not always identical. Hamor discusses peace, settlement, marriage, and trade, while the narrative also mentions material interests. Shechem is strongly motivated by his desire for Dinah.

The passage encourages readers to look carefully at motives rather than judging a situation solely by pleasant or peaceful words.

Words can lead to major consequences

Genesis 34:18 records a simple statement that the proposal pleased Hamor and Shechem. Yet what follows affects an entire city.

This illustrates how decisions made in a moment can produce consequences far beyond the people who initially make them. Scripture frequently presents human decisions within a larger moral narrative, showing the seriousness of choices, motives, and actions.

Do not confuse narrative description with moral approval

An important principle when studying Genesis is that the Bible often reports what people did without necessarily approving everything they did.

Genesis 34 records deception, sexual wrongdoing, negotiations, circumcision, revenge, killing, and plunder. The fact that these events are recorded does not mean that every action described is presented as an example to imitate.

Therefore, Genesis 34:18 should primarily be understood as part of the historical narrative rather than as a command or moral instruction to reproduce the actions of the characters.

Genesis 34:18 — Detailed Explanation in Urdu

“And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.”

“And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.”

یعنی یعقوب کے بیٹوں کی پیش کردہ بات حامور اور اس کے بیٹے شکم کو قابلِ قبول محسوس ہوئی۔

“Their words”
