Meaning and Explanation in English

Genesis 35:28–29 gives a short but significant account of the death and burial of Isaac, one of the central patriarchs in the Book of Genesis. Although these two verses are brief, they bring an important chapter of the patriarchal story to its conclusion.

1. “The days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years”

The expression “an hundred and fourscore years” is an older English way of saying one hundred and eighty years. Modern Bible translations render the same statement as “Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years” or “Isaac lived 180 years.”

Isaac was the son of Abraham and Sarah and the father of Esau and Jacob. His exceptionally long life connects several generations of the biblical patriarchal family.

The verse emphasizes the length of Isaac’s life. In the biblical narrative, longevity is frequently associated with a person reaching old age and completing the course of his earthly life. Genesis 35:29 specifically describes Isaac as being “old and full of days,” presenting his death as the conclusion of a long life rather than focusing on a sudden or premature death.

2. “Isaac gave up the ghost, and died”

The KJV uses the expression “gave up the ghost.” In older English, this means that Isaac breathed his last and died. Modern translations make the meaning more direct, using phrases such as “he breathed his last and died.”

This wording emphasizes the completion of Isaac’s earthly life. The passage does not describe his death with dramatic detail. Instead, the biblical writer gives a simple statement: Isaac reached the end of his long life, died, and was buried.

There is also an important sense of continuity here. Isaac’s death does not end the story of God’s dealings with the patriarchal family. His sons, particularly Jacob, continue the narrative.

3. “Was gathered unto his people”

The phrase “gathered unto his people” is significant biblical language. It appears elsewhere in Genesis in descriptions of the deaths of patriarchs. It can express the idea of joining one’s deceased ancestors or people after death.

The phrase therefore gives the verse a deeper meaning than simply saying that Isaac died. It places Isaac’s death within the continuing history of his family and ancestors.

Isaac had been part of the family line beginning with Abraham. His life therefore represents a link between earlier and later generations.

4. “Being old and full of days”

The expression “old and full of days” describes someone who has reached advanced age and completed a long life. Other translations express this idea as being “old and full of years” or having lived a “full life.”

The wording conveys a sense of completion. Isaac had lived 180 years, and the biblical account presents his life as reaching its natural conclusion.

This phrase also encourages readers to consider the value of a life as a whole rather than concentrating only on its final moment. Isaac’s story includes family relationships, promises, struggles, journeys, and faith. His death marks the closing of his generation’s major role in the narrative.

5. “His sons Esau and Jacob buried him”

Perhaps the most striking detail in the final verse is that both Esau and Jacob buried their father. Genesis names them together even though their relationship had previously been marked by serious conflict.

Esau and Jacob were twin brothers. Their story includes rivalry concerning birthright and blessing, and Jacob eventually left the family home. Later, however, the biblical narrative records their meeting again.

The fact that both sons participate in Isaac’s burial is therefore meaningful. At the end of Isaac’s life, the two brothers are together for the burial of their father.

The verse does not provide a lengthy account of their emotions, but the simple statement that Esau and Jacob buried Isaac places both sons together at this important family event.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 35:28–29

This short passage offers several themes for reflection.

First, human life has an appointed conclusion. Isaac lived 180 years, yet even such remarkable longevity eventually came to an end. The passage reminds readers that earthly life is temporary.

Second, a long life can be viewed as a completed journey. Isaac is described as “old and full of days.” The emphasis is not merely on his age but on the fullness of his life.

Third, family relationships matter. Esau and Jacob, despite their earlier conflict, are both present to bury their father. The scene reminds readers that family history can contain disagreement and reconciliation, while important moments can bring relatives together.

Fourth, generations continue. Isaac’s death marks the end of his earthly story, but the story of his family continues through Esau and Jacob. In Genesis, the passing of one generation frequently introduces the next stage of the narrative.

Fifth, the passage emphasizes remembrance. Isaac is not presented merely as a person who died. He is remembered as a patriarch who lived a long life and was buried by his sons. His place within the family history remains important.

Genesis 35:28–29 Explanation in Urdu

پیدائش (Genesis) 35:28–29 میں حضرت اسحاقؑ کی عمر، وفات اور تدفین کا مختصر مگر بہت اہم بیان ملتا ہے۔ کنگ جیمز ورژن میں یہ الفاظ ہیں:

“And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.”

2. “Isaac gave up the ghost”

3. “Gathered unto his people” کا مطلب

“Was gathered unto his people” ایک اہم بائبلی تعبیر ہے۔ اس کا مفہوم عام طور پر اپنے فوت شدہ آباؤ اجداد یا لوگوں کے ساتھ شامل ہونے کے تصور سے متعلق سمجھا جاتا ہے۔ یہی طرح کی تعبیر پیدائش کی کتاب میں دوسرے بزرگوں کی وفات کے بیان میں بھی ملتی ہے۔

اس لیے یہ جملہ صرف جسمانی موت کا ذکر نہیں کرتا بلکہ اسحاق کو ان کے آباؤ اجداد اور خاندانی تاریخ کے تسلسل میں بھی رکھتا ہے۔

4. “Old and full of days”

“Old and full of days” کا مطلب ہے کہ اسحاق ایک طویل اور بھرپور زندگی گزار کر بوڑھے ہوئے۔ جدید تراجم اس مفہوم کو “old and full of years” یا ایک مکمل زندگی گزارنے کے الفاظ سے بیان کرتے ہیں۔

“his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.”
