Complete Meaning of Philippians 1:6
Paul begins by saying:
“Being confident of this very thing…”
Paul was not expressing a vague hope. He was declaring a strong confidence. His confidence was based on the character and faithfulness of God.
The believers in Philippi had demonstrated their fellowship in the gospel. Paul had seen evidence of God’s work among them, and therefore he trusted that God would continue working in their lives.
The central message is:
God does not begin a spiritual work in a person’s life and then abandon it halfway. He faithfully continues His work toward the purpose He has established.
This does not mean that believers will never experience difficulties. Rather, it means that difficulties do not mean God has stopped working.
“He Which Hath Begun a Good Work in You”
The phrase “he which hath begun a good work in you” points directly to God as the initiator of spiritual transformation.
A person’s relationship with God involves more than outward religious activity. God works within the heart, shaping character, developing faith, teaching obedience, producing spiritual maturity, and drawing believers closer to Christ.
The expression “good work” can be understood in connection with the gospel and the transforming work of God in the lives of the Philippian believers.
God’s work may include:
- Bringing a person to faith in Christ
- Teaching the truth of Scripture
- Developing spiritual maturity
- Producing Christlike character
- Strengthening faith during trials
- Teaching patience and obedience
- Encouraging love toward others
- Helping believers remain faithful to the gospel
Sometimes Christians look at their present condition and think, “I am not where I should be.” Philippians 1:6 reminds them to look not only at themselves but also at the God who is working in them.
Spiritual maturity takes time. Just as a seed grows gradually into a plant, Christian character develops through an ongoing relationship with God.
“Will Perform It”
The next part of the verse says:
“Will perform it…”
The word “perform” carries the idea of bringing something to completion or carrying it forward toward its intended purpose.
Paul’s confidence rests in God’s faithfulness.
Human beings can begin things and leave them unfinished. People can make promises and fail to keep them. Plans can change, circumstances can interfere, and human strength can become weak.
But God is faithful.
When God begins His work, He is not careless about what He has started. His purpose is not temporary or accidental. He continues working through different circumstances and seasons.
This should give Christians hope.
There may be days when a believer feels spiritually strong, and there may be other days when faith feels difficult. There may be seasons of victory and seasons of struggle. Yet God’s work is not measured by one difficult day.
A Christian should therefore avoid believing that every struggle means failure.
God can use difficult circumstances to develop:
- patience,
- humility,
- perseverance,
- compassion,
- wisdom,
- dependence on Him,
- and deeper faith.
The Christian life is a journey of continual transformation.
“Until the Day of Jesus Christ”
Paul concludes the verse with the words:
“Until the day of Jesus Christ.”
This points toward the future and gives the verse an eternal perspective.
The “day of Jesus Christ” refers to the future fulfillment of God’s purposes connected with Christ. Paul is looking beyond the present circumstances of the Philippian believers toward the completion of God’s work.
This teaches an important spiritual principle: God’s work in believers has an eternal goal.
Christians live in the present, but their hope is also directed toward the future.
The believer may not understand everything God is doing today. Some circumstances may remain confusing. Some prayers may seem unanswered. Some spiritual lessons may take years to understand.
Nevertheless, Philippians 1:6 encourages believers to trust God’s faithfulness.
The verse does not say that everything will happen according to our preferred timetable. Instead, it emphasizes that God’s work continues according to His purpose.
What Philippians 1:6 Teaches Christians Today
1. God Begins the Good Work
The verse directs attention toward God rather than human ability.
Christian life is not simply about trying harder. God is actively involved in transforming believers.
This should produce humility because Christians recognize that spiritual growth is ultimately connected with God’s grace and work.
2. Spiritual Growth Takes Time
Many people become discouraged because they expect immediate perfection.
But Philippians 1:6 presents spiritual development as something that continues over time.
A believer may still have weaknesses while genuinely growing in faith.
Progress may sometimes be difficult to see, but God can be working beneath the surface.
3. Failure Does Not Mean God Has Abandoned You
Every Christian can experience moments of weakness.
A believer may fall into discouragement, struggle with temptation, make mistakes, or experience spiritual dryness.
Philippians 1:6 provides encouragement that God’s work is not necessarily finished simply because a person is currently struggling.
The proper response to failure is not hopelessness but repentance, renewed faith, and continued dependence upon God.
4. God Is Faithful
The foundation of Paul’s confidence was not the perfection of the Philippians.
His confidence was in God.
This distinction is important.
If our hope depended entirely upon our own consistency, we would constantly be afraid. But Scripture repeatedly presents God as faithful to His purposes.
Therefore, Christians can face the future with hope.
5. The Christian Life Has a Future Goal
Paul’s statement points toward “the day of Jesus Christ.”
Christianity is not merely about improving our present circumstances. It includes the hope of Christ’s future and the completion of God’s purposes.
This future perspective can help believers remain faithful during difficult circumstances.
Philippians 1:6 Explanation in Urdu
فلپیوں 1:6 (KJV):
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
“Being confident of this very thing”
“He which hath begun a good work in you”
“Will perform it”
“Until the day of Jesus Christ”
Philippians 1:6 and Christian Hope
Practical Application of Philippians 1:6
