“Not as though I had already attained”

Paul begins with humility. He does not claim that he has already reached everything God wants him to become. Although Paul was an experienced apostle, a faithful servant, and a mature believer, he still recognized that there was more spiritual growth ahead.

The word “attained” expresses the idea of reaching a goal or obtaining something. Paul understood that his Christian journey was not finished.

This is an important lesson for every believer. Spiritual maturity should produce humility rather than pride. A person may have considerable knowledge of Scripture, years of Christian experience, or many opportunities to serve God, but there is always room to grow.

Paul’s statement reminds Christians not to become spiritually complacent. Following Christ is a lifelong journey.

“Either were already perfect”

Paul continues by saying that he was not already “perfect.” The idea here is spiritual completeness or maturity. Paul was not claiming to be completely without spiritual growth still needed.

This does not mean Paul was uncertain about his salvation. Rather, he understood that salvation and spiritual maturity involve an ongoing relationship with Christ.

A believer can genuinely belong to Christ while still needing to grow in patience, love, wisdom, obedience, faith, and holiness.

Christian maturity does not mean thinking, “I have nothing more to learn.” Instead, mature faith recognizes the need to continue learning from Christ.

“But I follow after”

Paul’s response to recognizing that he had not yet arrived was not discouragement. He said, “I follow after.”

This expression describes determined pursuit. Paul was moving forward rather than looking backward.

The Christian life requires perseverance. There may be difficulties, disappointments, temptations, suffering, or moments when spiritual progress seems slow. Nevertheless, believers are called to continue following Christ.

Paul’s example teaches us that spiritual growth requires intentional effort. Prayer, Scripture, obedience, fellowship, worship, service, and faithfulness are all ways believers continue to pursue Christ.

Following Christ is not merely a one-time decision; it becomes a daily pattern of life.

“If that I may apprehend”

The word “apprehend” here carries the idea of taking hold of or reaching something. Paul wanted to fully embrace the purpose and calling for which Christ had taken hold of his life.

Paul was not simply interested in knowing about Christianity. He wanted his entire life to reflect the purpose of Christ.

This challenges believers to ask important questions:

  • What purpose has God given me?
  • Am I faithfully following Christ?
  • Am I continuing to grow spiritually?
  • Am I using my life to serve God?
  • Am I allowing Christ to shape my priorities?

The Christian life involves both receiving God’s grace and responding faithfully to His calling.

“That for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus”

This is the heart of the verse.

Paul recognized that Christ Jesus had apprehended him. His life belonged to Christ, and Christ had a purpose for him.

Paul’s conversion was not simply a change of religious identity. It transformed the direction of his life. The man who had once opposed the followers of Jesus became a devoted servant and messenger of Christ.

Paul therefore pursued the purpose for which Christ had taken hold of him.

This provides a beautiful picture of Christian calling. Christ does not merely save people from their former life; He calls them into a new life of faithfulness, service, love, and obedience.

The Main Spiritual Lesson

Philippians 3:12 teaches that spiritual growth is a continuing pursuit of Christ.

Paul had accomplished much, but he did not consider himself finished. His confidence was not based on personal perfection. Instead, his eyes remained focused on Christ.

This attitude protects believers from two dangers.

The first danger is pride. A person may become proud because of spiritual knowledge, ministry, achievements, or experience. Paul’s example shows that true spiritual maturity includes humility.

The second danger is discouragement. Someone may look at their weaknesses and conclude that they can never grow. Paul provides another perspective: although he had not yet attained perfection, he continued to follow after Christ.

The goal is not to pretend that we have arrived. The goal is to keep moving forward.

“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after…”

“Not as though I had already attained”

“Either were already perfect”

“But I follow after”

“If that I may apprehend”

“For which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus”

Philippians 3:12 — Practical Lessons for Christians

Philippians 3:12 gives several practical lessons.
