English Explanation

Revelation 10:11 is a powerful verse about John’s continuing prophetic mission. After John receives and eats the little book, he is told that his work is not finished. He must “prophesy again” before many peoples, nations, languages, and kings. The verse connects John’s personal calling with the worldwide scope of the message contained in the Book of Revelation.

The words are spoken after the angel gives John the little book and instructs him to eat it. John experiences both sweetness and bitterness. The message of God can be sweet because it reveals His truth, promises, justice, salvation, and ultimate victory. At the same time, it can be bitter because God’s prophetic message also reveals judgment, suffering, rebellion, and the consequences of sin. Revelation 10:11 follows this experience by giving John another responsibility: he must continue proclaiming the prophetic message.

“Thou must prophesy again”

The phrase “Thou must prophesy again” emphasizes continuation. John had already received visions and had written important revelations, but his prophetic assignment was not complete.

The word “must” communicates necessity. John is not simply being invited to continue because it is convenient or interesting. He has been given a divine responsibility. His prophetic ministry must continue according to the purpose of God.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: receiving God’s truth also brings responsibility. A person who understands God’s message should not keep that truth hidden. John was commanded to communicate what he had been shown.

“Before many peoples”

The prophecy was not intended for John alone. The message would reach many peoples. Revelation contains messages that address the spiritual condition of humanity, the reality of God’s judgment, the call to faithfulness, and the ultimate triumph of God.

This phrase reminds readers that biblical prophecy has a broad audience. God’s truth is not limited to one individual or one small group. The message of Scripture speaks to people across generations and cultures.

“And nations”

The mention of nations expands the scope even further. John’s prophetic message concerns the nations of the world.

Throughout Revelation, nations appear in connection with political power, human rebellion, worship, judgment, and God’s final kingdom. The message therefore has a universal dimension.

The verse encourages believers to recognize that God’s purposes extend beyond their immediate community. The biblical message concerns humanity as a whole.

“And tongues”

The word “tongues” refers to different languages and, by extension, different linguistic communities. This is significant because Revelation was not intended to remain confined to one language or culture.

God’s message reaches across linguistic boundaries. The truth revealed to John would eventually be communicated to people who speak different languages.

This also reflects the universal nature of the Christian message. People from different backgrounds can encounter God’s Word and respond to it.

“And kings”

The final word in the verse is “kings.” Kings represent rulers, authorities, and those who possess earthly power.

John’s prophecy therefore has significance not only for ordinary people but also for those who govern nations. Revelation repeatedly shows that earthly rulers are accountable to God. Human authority may appear powerful, but it remains under the ultimate sovereignty of God.

The mention of kings is especially meaningful in Revelation because political and spiritual powers play an important role in the unfolding prophetic vision. John is commanded to proclaim God’s message regardless of the status or influence of those who hear it.

The worldwide scope of Revelation

Revelation 10:11 gives a helpful perspective on the entire book. Revelation is not merely a collection of mysterious symbols. It contains a message intended for a broad audience.

The verse points toward a prophetic message that reaches:

  • Peoples — communities and individuals
  • Nations — societies and countries
  • Tongues — different language groups
  • Kings — rulers and authorities

The progression demonstrates the extensive reach of John’s prophetic responsibility.

A lesson about faithfulness

John’s experience also teaches believers about perseverance. He had received a difficult message, but he was told to continue.

Sometimes God’s truth is encouraging and comforting. At other times, it confronts sin and warns of judgment. Faithfulness means remaining committed to God’s truth even when the message is difficult.

Revelation 10:11 therefore encourages Christians not to choose only the comfortable parts of biblical teaching. God’s Word contains both promises and warnings. The faithful response is to receive the whole message and communicate it responsibly.

Prophecy and God’s sovereignty

Another major theme in this verse is God’s sovereignty. John does not decide the content or destination of his prophetic ministry by himself. His assignment comes from God.

The verse demonstrates that God’s purposes move beyond human limitations. A message given to one servant in one historical setting can eventually speak to people across nations, languages, and generations.

Revelation 10:11 is therefore both a command to John and a reminder to readers that God’s truth has a universal purpose.
