English Explanation

Revelation 13:7 is a powerful and sobering verse describing the authority that is temporarily permitted to the beast during the prophetic events of the end times. The verse presents three important ideas: war against the saints, the apparent overcoming of God’s people, and authority over peoples and nations. Understanding these themes requires reading the verse within the wider message of Revelation, where evil is powerful but never ultimately victorious over God.

1. “It was given unto him”

The first important expression is “it was given unto him.” This wording indicates that the beast does not possess unlimited authority independently. His power is permitted within the boundaries of God’s sovereign purposes.

Revelation 13 portrays the beast as an extraordinarily influential power. However, the language that authority was “given” reminds readers that God remains ultimately sovereign. Evil may receive permission to operate for a particular period, but it does not become equal to God.

This is an important biblical principle. Throughout Scripture, earthly kingdoms and rulers may exercise tremendous authority, yet their authority remains limited. Revelation therefore does not present the final conflict as a battle between two equal powers. God remains the supreme ruler, while the beast represents rebellious power operating under temporary permission.

2. “To make war with the saints”

The beast’s hostility is directed against the saints, meaning those who belong faithfully to God.

The expression “make war” communicates more than ordinary opposition. It describes organized and aggressive persecution. Revelation presents the end-time conflict as a spiritual and earthly struggle in which faithful believers face pressure because of their allegiance to God and their testimony concerning Jesus Christ.

The saints are not described as people who escape every difficulty. Instead, Revelation warns that faithfulness can involve suffering. Believers may face intimidation, discrimination, persecution, imprisonment, or even death because they refuse to worship the beast and participate in rebellion against God.

This message is especially significant because Christianity does not promise that faithful believers will always experience comfortable circumstances. The book of Revelation repeatedly encourages believers to remain faithful even when obedience becomes costly.

3. “And to overcome them”

Perhaps the most difficult part of the verse is the statement that the beast is permitted “to overcome them.”

At first glance, this may appear to mean that evil finally defeats God’s people. But the wider message of Revelation shows that this is not the ultimate meaning.

The beast can overcome the saints in an earthly and physical sense. Faithful believers may be killed or deprived of worldly security. Yet Revelation distinguishes between temporary physical victory and eternal spiritual victory.

A believer who refuses to deny Christ may lose his or her earthly life, but that person does not lose eternal life with God. Revelation later emphasizes the ultimate victory of those who remain faithful.

Therefore, this verse should not be interpreted as teaching that God abandons His people. Rather, it reveals the severity of persecution that may occur before God’s final judgment.

The apparent victory of the beast is temporary. Its authority has an appointed limit, and its final judgment is certain.

4. “Power was given him over all kindreds”

The verse then expands the beast’s sphere of influence. Authority is given to him over “all kindreds.”

The word “kindreds” refers to peoples, families, or groups of humanity. The expression emphasizes the broad international character of the beast’s authority.

Revelation 13 does not describe a small local conflict. The beast’s influence reaches across different peoples and societies. This demonstrates the worldwide character of the final opposition against God described in the chapter.

The passage also reminds readers that human divisions—ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and national—do not prevent evil from seeking global influence.

5. “And tongues”

The reference to “tongues” emphasizes different language groups.

Revelation frequently uses the combination of peoples, nations, and languages to communicate a worldwide scope. The gospel itself is intended for people from every language and nation, and Revelation ultimately shows redeemed people from all these groups worshipping God.

In Revelation 13, however, the beast’s authority is portrayed as reaching across linguistic boundaries.

This creates a striking contrast: humanity can be united either in rebellion against God or in worship of God. The chapter warns about false unity based on allegiance to evil, while the rest of Revelation points toward true unity under the reign of God and Christ.

6. “And nations”

The final phrase is “and nations.”

The beast’s authority is portrayed as extending over nations. This indicates political, social, and international influence.

The verse therefore presents a picture of a power that combines religious opposition, political influence, and international authority. Its goal is not merely to control a small group of people but to exercise broad dominion.

Yet Revelation consistently reminds readers that earthly kingdoms are temporary. No matter how powerful a ruler, empire, or political system appears, it cannot overthrow the eternal kingdom of God.

7. The central spiritual lesson

The most important lesson of Revelation 13:7 is not simply that persecution will occur. It is that God’s people are called to remain faithful even when evil appears to be winning.

There may be seasons when righteousness seems weak and evil appears powerful. Revelation prepares Christians for such circumstances. Faithfulness cannot depend only on favorable earthly conditions.

The saints are called to trust God even when obedience brings suffering.

The verse therefore challenges believers to ask:

  • Will I remain faithful when faith becomes costly?
  • Will I follow God when powerful people oppose biblical truth?
  • Will I value eternal faithfulness more than temporary security?
  • Will I recognize that earthly power is temporary?
  • Will I trust God even when I cannot immediately see His victory?

These questions make Revelation 13:7 relevant beyond end-time prophecy. It teaches a broader principle of Christian perseverance.

8. Evil has limits

Although the beast receives extraordinary authority, the phrase “it was given” remains crucial.

The beast is powerful, but not sovereign.

The beast can persecute, but it cannot cancel God’s promises.

The beast can overcome believers physically, but it cannot determine their eternal destiny.

The beast can influence nations, but it cannot take God’s throne.

This distinction gives hope to Christians reading this difficult passage. Revelation is not ultimately a book about the triumph of evil. It is a book about the final victory of God.

The beast’s authority has a limit. Its judgment is certain. Christ remains Lord, and God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail.

“And it was given unto him” — “اور اسے دیا گیا”۔

“It was given unto him.”
