English Explanation
Revelation 22:15 is part of the closing vision of the Bible. The surrounding verses describe the blessings of those who belong to God and have access to the holy city, the New Jerusalem, and the tree of life. This verse presents the opposite picture by describing those who remain outside the holy city because their lives are characterized by rebellion, wickedness, deception, and rejection of God.
The phrase “For without” means outside. In the context of Revelation 21–22, John is describing the holy city and the eternal dwelling place of God’s redeemed people. The verse emphasizes the separation between holiness and persistent evil. It is not merely describing a physical location; it communicates a spiritual reality. God’s eternal kingdom is holy, and those who deliberately cling to sinful ways cannot treat God’s holiness as though it does not matter.
The first word used is “dogs.” In biblical language, “dogs” can be used symbolically for people who behave in an impure, hostile, or spiritually corrupt manner. This does not mean that ordinary animals are evil. Rather, the term is being used figuratively to describe people whose conduct is incompatible with the holiness of God’s kingdom.
The verse then mentions “sorcerers.” Sorcery represents involvement with occult practices and attempts to seek supernatural power apart from God. Throughout Scripture, God’s people are repeatedly warned against practices that replace trust in God with occult power, magic, divination, or spiritual manipulation. Revelation therefore reminds readers that the pursuit of spiritual power outside God’s will is not harmless.
Next, John mentions “whoremongers.” This word refers to people involved in sexual immorality. Scripture consistently teaches that human sexuality is not something to be treated without moral responsibility. The verse is not simply condemning people for having struggled with sin; it presents a serious warning against continuing in immoral behavior while rejecting God’s authority.
The next category is “murderers.” Human life has great value because people are created by God. Murder represents a profound violation of that value. Jesus also taught that hatred and murderous anger reveal serious problems within the human heart. Revelation therefore presents murder as part of the broader pattern of rebellion and destructive behavior.
The verse also identifies “idolaters.” Idolatry means giving worship, devotion, or ultimate allegiance to something other than God. An idol does not have to be a physical statue. Anything that takes God’s rightful place in a person’s life can become an idol when it receives the devotion and trust that belong to God alone.
Finally, the verse says “whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” This is especially striking because lying is not described merely as something a person occasionally does. The wording points to people who love falsehood and deliberately make or practice lies. The issue is therefore deeper than an isolated failure. It concerns a settled affection for deception and a willingness to live contrary to truth.
This connects strongly with the message of Revelation. The Bible presents God as completely truthful and trustworthy, while Satan is associated with deception. Revelation repeatedly calls God’s people to remain faithful, truthful, and spiritually awake. Those who belong to Christ are called to reject deception rather than embrace it.
At the same time, this verse should not be used to communicate that a person who has ever committed one of these sins is automatically beyond God’s mercy. The wider message of the Bible includes repentance, forgiveness, transformation, and salvation through Jesus Christ. Revelation 22:15 is a warning concerning those who persist in sinful rebellion and remain outside the holy character of God’s kingdom.
The verse therefore asks an important question: What kind of life are we choosing? Christianity is not simply about claiming a religious identity. It involves turning away from sin and following God with a changed heart. The contrast in Revelation 22 is between those who receive God’s life and those who continue to embrace practices that oppose God’s character.
There is also a powerful lesson about truth. The final category in this verse is “whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” Truth matters deeply to God. A believer should therefore strive to be honest in speech, relationships, business, promises, and daily conduct. When someone recognizes that they have lied or acted wrongly, the right response is not to hide the sin but to confess it, turn away from it, and seek God’s direction.
Revelation 22:15 should therefore be read as both a warning and a call to holiness. God’s eternal kingdom is not a place where evil continues without consequence. God promises a future in which righteousness, truth, purity, and His presence characterize His people.
The passage encourages believers to examine their lives honestly. Are there sinful practices that they are deliberately protecting? Are they allowing deception, hatred, immorality, idolatry, or other forms of rebellion to control them? The answer should lead not to despair but to repentance and renewed faithfulness.
The great hope of Revelation is that God will ultimately establish a holy creation where His people can dwell with Him. Revelation 22:15 makes the holiness of that future especially clear by showing what does not belong there. The verse reminds readers that eternal life is not simply escape from suffering; it is entrance into God’s righteous and holy presence.
“whosoever loveth and maketh a lie”
