English Explanation

“And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD”

Naomi responded to Ruth’s report by blessing Boaz. She recognized that Boaz’s generosity deserved gratitude. More importantly, Naomi saw God’s hand behind the kindness Ruth had experienced.

The phrase “Blessed be he of the LORD” expresses a prayer and acknowledgment that Boaz should receive God’s blessing for his goodness.

Boaz had not merely allowed Ruth to collect grain. He had protected her, spoken kindly to her, provided for her, and treated her with dignity. His actions demonstrated compassion toward someone who was vulnerable and living as a foreigner in Bethlehem.

Naomi’s response also shows a change in her outlook. Earlier, Naomi had spoken about the bitterness she had experienced. Now, hearing about Boaz, she begins to recognize that God’s kindness has not disappeared from her life.

Sometimes people can see only their present difficulties and fail to recognize the ways God is still providing for them. Ruth’s experience in Boaz’s field gave Naomi a reason to look beyond her sorrow and notice God’s continuing care.

“Who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead”

This is one of the most meaningful statements in the verse.

Naomi understood God’s kindness as extending to both the living and the dead. The living included Naomi and Ruth, who were still facing the challenges of life. The dead referred to Naomi’s deceased husband Elimelech and her sons, whose family line and memory remained important.

The idea of kindness here is closely connected with faithful love, mercy, loyalty, and covenant faithfulness. Naomi was beginning to understand that the story of her family had not ended with death and loss.

God’s providence was still unfolding.

Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi was itself an expression of remarkable kindness. Boaz’s generosity toward Ruth was another expression of kindness. Through these human actions, Naomi could recognize that God’s care was still present.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: God’s provision may sometimes appear through ordinary people and ordinary circumstances.

Ruth went into a field simply to gather grain. Yet that ordinary decision placed her in the field of Boaz. What seemed like a normal day of work became an important moment in the story of redemption.

“And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us”

Naomi then gave Ruth important information about Boaz.

She explained that Boaz was “near of kin” to them. In ancient Israel, family relationships carried significant responsibilities. A close relative could sometimes have a role in helping family members who had experienced poverty, loss, or the death of a husband.

Therefore, Boaz’s identity was extremely important.

Until this point, Ruth knew Boaz as a generous man who had helped her in the field. Naomi understood something more: Boaz belonged to their extended family.

This changed the significance of Ruth’s encounter with him.

The story demonstrates how a seemingly ordinary event can become part of a much larger purpose. Ruth did not initially know where her work would lead. Naomi did not initially know how their needs would be met. Yet God’s providence was unfolding step by step.

“One of our next kinsmen”

The final phrase emphasizes the closeness of Boaz’s relationship to Naomi’s family.

A kinsman was a relative who could potentially have an important responsibility toward the family. In the Book of Ruth, this concept becomes central to the later events involving redemption and family inheritance.

This verse therefore serves as a turning point.

Ruth had gone into the field looking for food. She returned carrying grain and carrying news that gave Naomi renewed hope.

Naomi realized that Boaz was connected to their family. The possibility of restoration was beginning to appear.

The verse does not say that everything was already solved. Instead, it shows the beginning of hope.

That is an important lesson. God’s work in our lives may begin with a small sign of kindness before the complete answer becomes visible.

Spiritual Lessons from Ruth 2:20

1. God’s kindness can continue through difficult seasons

Naomi had experienced deep losses, but Ruth 2:20 reminds us that suffering does not necessarily mean that God’s kindness has ended.

Naomi was beginning to recognize God’s goodness again through Ruth’s experience.

2. Kindness can become an instrument of God’s provision

Boaz showed kindness to Ruth, but his actions also became part of God’s provision for Naomi.

A simple act of generosity can have consequences far beyond what the giver sees.

3. God can work through ordinary circumstances

Ruth went to work in a field. She gathered grain. She met Boaz.

Nothing about the beginning of the day necessarily appeared extraordinary. Yet these ordinary circumstances became important in God’s unfolding plan.

This encourages believers not to underestimate ordinary acts of faithfulness, work, generosity, and obedience.

4. Hope can return gradually

Naomi did not receive a complete solution in one moment. Instead, hope came gradually.

First there was Ruth’s faithfulness. Then there was food. Then there was Boaz’s kindness. Finally, Naomi learned that Boaz was a close relative.

The story shows that restoration can unfold one step at a time.

5. Family responsibility matters

Boaz’s relationship to Naomi’s family becomes significant because the biblical story places importance on caring for relatives and protecting family inheritance.

Ruth 2:20 prepares the reader for the events that follow and introduces the important theme of the kinsman-redeemer.

“And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.”

Boaz
