Detailed English Explanation

“Hereby know we”

John begins with the words, “Hereby know we.” This means that believers can have genuine assurance concerning their relationship with God. Christian faith is not presented here as something based entirely on uncertainty. John points to evidence by which believers can recognize God’s work in their lives.

The surrounding passage gives several signs of this relationship. A person who knows God seeks to love others, confesses Jesus Christ, and lives in fellowship with God. The Holy Spirit is also central to this assurance.

John is not saying that Christians understand everything about God. Rather, he teaches that there are spiritual realities that believers can recognize because God has acted in their lives.

“That we dwell in him”

The phrase “we dwell in him” describes a continuing relationship with God. To dwell in God means to remain in fellowship with Him, to depend upon Him, and to live within the relationship established through faith in Jesus Christ.

This idea is deeper than occasionally thinking about God. It describes a life that is connected to Him.

A Christian’s relationship with God should influence daily choices, attitudes, relationships, and priorities. Faith is not meant to remain separate from ordinary life. God’s presence should affect how believers treat other people, respond to difficulties, forgive others, and seek to live according to His teachings.

The word “dwell” also communicates a sense of continuing in a relationship. The believer is called to remain connected to God rather than treating faith as something temporary.

“And he in us”

John then gives the wonderful complementary truth: “and he in us.”

The Christian relationship with God is not merely about people trying to reach God. God also works within His people. Through His Spirit, God makes His presence known in the lives of believers.

This does not mean that a human being becomes God. Instead, it describes spiritual fellowship and God’s active work in the believer’s life.

The presence of God should produce spiritual transformation. As believers grow in their relationship with God, His love becomes increasingly visible in their conduct. They learn to love others, practice forgiveness, pursue righteousness, and depend upon God rather than relying entirely upon themselves.

“Because he hath given us of his Spirit”

John identifies the reason believers can know that they dwell in God and He in them: God has given them of His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is therefore central to Christian fellowship with God. The Spirit bears witness to God’s work and enables believers to live in relationship with Him.

The expression “given us of his Spirit” points to God’s gracious gift. Fellowship with God is not something humans earn through their own achievements. God Himself provides what is necessary for spiritual life.

The Holy Spirit also helps believers understand spiritual truth, grow in faith, and produce qualities that reflect God’s character. Throughout the New Testament, the Spirit is associated with guidance, transformation, spiritual gifts, and the strengthening of believers.

The Connection Between God’s Spirit and God’s Love

The immediate context of 1 John 4 focuses strongly on love. John teaches that believers should love one another because love is from God. He also explains that God’s love was demonstrated through Jesus Christ.

Therefore, 1 John 4:13 should not be separated from the teaching about love surrounding it.

If God dwells in His people through His Spirit, His love should increasingly become visible in their relationships. Christian love is not simply an emotion. It involves patience, kindness, forgiveness, compassion, humility, and a willingness to seek another person’s good.

This does not mean that Christians will never make mistakes. Believers continue to grow and sometimes fail. The point is that God’s Spirit continually works within them, leading them toward a life that reflects God’s character.

What Does This Verse Teach About Assurance?

One important lesson from this verse is spiritual assurance.

Believers may sometimes experience uncertainty, weakness, or difficult circumstances. John points them toward God’s work rather than telling them to depend only upon their emotions.

The gift of the Spirit is evidence of God’s gracious relationship with His people. The believer’s confidence rests ultimately upon God’s action.

This provides encouragement during difficult seasons. When circumstances change, God’s faithfulness does not change. The Christian can continue seeking Him, trusting Him, and growing in fellowship with Him.

Living Out 1 John 4:13 Today

This verse has practical meaning for everyday Christian life.

First, believers should remain close to God through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience. Fellowship with God should be an ongoing part of life.

Second, believers should allow God’s love to influence their relationships. If God is working within a person, that relationship should increasingly affect the way the person treats family members, friends, neighbors, and even people with whom they disagree.

Third, Christians should depend upon the Holy Spirit. Spiritual growth is not achieved merely through human effort. Believers need God’s help to develop patience, wisdom, self-control, love, and faithfulness.

Fourth, this verse encourages Christians to live with confidence in God’s presence. The believer is not spiritually abandoned. God has given His Spirit as a gift and works within His people.

1 John 4:13 in Urdu —

آیت

1 یوحنا 4:13 (KJV):
“Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”
