Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Obadiah 1:6–21)
Obadiah 1:6
Verse:
How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!
English Explanation: This verse highlights the absolute exposure and stripping of Edom (referred to as Esau). The Edomites believed their rocky, mountainous terrain provided impregnable hiding places for themselves and their treasures. However, God declares that no secret vault or hidden wealth will escape the thorough search and plunder of their enemies. It is a stark reminder that human security systems fail completely under divine judgment.
Obadiah 1:7
Verse:
All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee and prevailed against thee they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee there is none understanding in him.
English Explanation: Edom relied heavily on political alliances and treaties. God reveals the ultimate betrayal: the very allies they trusted will escort them out to the border, deceiving them and turning against them. Sharing bread was a sacred bond of peace and loyalty in the ancient Near East, yet those who ate Edom’s bread would set a trap for them. Edom’s legendary wisdom would fail to perceive this betrayal until it was too late.
Obadiah 1:8
Verse:
Shall I not in that day saith the LORD even destroy the wise men out of Edom and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
English Explanation: The region of Edom, particularly Teman, was famous in the ancient world for its sages and intellectual wisdom. God declares that when His day of judgment arrives, He will strip Edom of this intellectual superiority. Their wise men will be paralyzed by confusion, proving that worldly wisdom is utterly useless when a nation sets itself against the purposes of God.
Obadiah 1:9
Verse:
And thy mighty men O Teman shall be dismayed to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
English Explanation: Teman was a key city in Edom, known for breeding fierce, elite warriors. God prophesies that even these seasoned combatants will be gripped by overwhelming panic and terror. Deprived of both intellectual wisdom and military courage, Edom will face total slaughter, leading to the complete annihilation of its inhabitants from the mountainous terrain.
Obadiah 1:10
Verse:
For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
English Explanation: Here, God gives the moral justification for Edom’s severe sentence. Edom and Israel were brother nations, descended from the twins Esau and Jacob. Instead of showing familial love and protection, Edom treated Israel with cruel violence during times of distress. Because of this malicious betrayal of kinship, Edom would be covered in perpetual shame and permanently erased from history.
Obadiah 1:11
Verse:
In the day that thou stoodest on the other side in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots upon Jerusalem even thou wast as one of them.
English Explanation: God recounts Edom’s specific crime during the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem. Instead of rushing to help their brother, the Edomites stood aloof on the “other side,” acting as passive observers. Worse yet, by rejoicing and benefiting from the foreign invasion where pagan nations cast lots over Jerusalem’s wealth, Edom became just as guilty as the actual invaders.
Obadiah 1:12
Verse:
But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
English Explanation: This verse is a divine rebuke of Edom’s malicious attitude. God highlights three grave sins of the heart: gloating over a brother’s misfortune, rejoicing at their destruction, and speaking boastfully while they suffered. God hates arrogance and schadenfreude (pleasure derived from another’s misfortune), especially when directed at His covenant people.
Obadiah 1:13
Verse:
Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity yea thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity
English Explanation: Edom did not stop at gloating; they escalated to active exploitation. When Jerusalem fell, the Edomites marched through the broken gates of God’s people to participate in looting. God repeats the phrase “the day of their calamity” three times to emphasize how heinous it was for Edom to steal their brother’s possessions at their absolute lowest point.
Obadiah 1:14
Verse:
Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway to cut off those of his that did escape neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
English Explanation: This details the most sinister act of Edom’s betrayal. They set up blockades at the crossroads to catch fleeing Israelite refugees. Instead of granting them safe passage, the Edomites either slaughtered the escapees on the spot or captured them and handed them over to the Babylonian conquerors. This cold-blooded violation of human mercy sealed Edom’s doom.
Obadiah 1:15
Verse:
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen as thou hast done it shall be done unto thee thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
English Explanation: Obadiah introduces a major prophetic theme: “The Day of the LORD.” This is a time of ultimate divine reckoning for all pagan nations. God establishes the divine law of retaliation (Lex Talionis): “as you have done, it shall be done to you.” The violence, betrayal, and looting that Edom inflicted upon Israel would return directly as judgment upon their own heads.
Obadiah 1:16
Verse:
For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain so shall all the heathen drink continually yea they shall drink and they shall swallow down and they shall be as though they had not been.
Explanation: Just as the Edomites profaned God’s holy mountain (Zion) by drinking and celebrating Israel’s downfall, a reversal is coming. The heathen nations will be forced to drink from a different cup—the cup of God’s wrath. They will drink it continuously until they stumble, swallow it down, and face such complete destruction that it will be as if they never existed.
Obadiah 1:17
Verse:
But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance and there shall be holiness and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
English Explanation: In contrast to the total erasure of Edom, God promises restoration for His people. Mount Zion, which was desecrated and ruined, will become a place of refuge, survival, and holiness. The scattered house of Jacob will return from captivity and reclaim the lands, inheritances, and blessings that were rightfully theirs.
Obadiah 1:18
Verse:
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame and the house of Esau for stubble and they shall kindle in them and devour them and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau for the LORD hath spoken it.
English Explanation: God uses powerful metaphors of fire and agriculture. Israel (Jacob and Joseph combined) will act as an unstoppable fire, while Edom (Esau) will be nothing more than dry stubble or straw. When the fire touches the stubble, it consumes it instantly and completely. The verse guarantees that not a single survivor will remain of Edom, confirmed by the absolute authority of God’s word.
Obadiah 1:19
Verse:
And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau and they of the plain the Philistines and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
English Explanation: This verse describes the geographical expansion of the restored kingdom of Israel. The Jewish remnants from the Negev (south) will expand to occupy the mountains of Esau. Those living in the foothills will take over Philistine territory. Israel will reclaim the fertile fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and the tribe of Benjamin will expand across the Jordan River into Gilead.
Obadiah 1:20
Verse:
And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites even unto Zarephath and the captivity of Jerusalem which is in Sepharad shall possess the cities of the south.
English Explanation: The returning exiles of Israel will inherit vast territories previously held by foreign nations. The northern exiles will possess Canaanite lands stretching as far north as Zarephath (modern-day Lebanon). Meanwhile, the exiles from Jerusalem who were displaced to Sepharad will return to inhabit and govern the cities of the Negev (the South).
Obadiah 1:21
Verse:
And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau and the kingdom shall be the LORD’S.
English Explanation: The prophecy of Obadiah concludes with a triumphant, messianic vision. “Saviours” or deliverers (leaders raised by God) will rule from Mount Zion, executing divine justice over the mountains of Edom. Ultimately, human empires will crumble, and the absolute sovereign rule, authority, and kingdom will belong entirely to Yahweh.
Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Jonah 1:1–5)
Jonah 1:1
Verse:
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai saying
English Explanation: The Book of Jonah begins with a standard prophetic formula: God speaks directly to His prophet. Jonah, whose name means “Dove,” is identified historically as the son of Amittai. This opening establishes that the message and command Jonah received were not from his own imagination, but were an authentic, authoritative revelation from God.
Jonah 1:2
Verse:
Arise go to Nineveh that great city and cry against it for their wickedness is come up before me.
English Explanation: God issues a clear, urgent two-part command: “Arise” and “go.” Jonah’s mission is to travel to Nineveh, the massive capital of the brutal Assyrian Empire. He is commanded to preach a message of warning and judgment against it because their extreme sin, violence, and moral degradation have reached a threshold that demands divine intervention.
Jonah 1:3
Verse:
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD and went down to Joppa and he found a ship going to Tarshish so he paid the fare thereof and went down into it to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
English Explanation: Instead of obeying, Jonah rebels. He boards a ship heading toward Tarshish (likely in modern-day Spain), which was in the exact opposite direction of Nineveh. Jonah tries to escape “the presence of the LORD”—believing that leaving the promised land would release him from his prophetic duty. The text repeats “went down” twice, emphasizing his physical and spiritual descent away from God.
Jonah 1:4
Verse:
But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea and there was a mighty tempest in the sea so that the ship was like to be broken.
English Explanation: Jonah could run from his mission, but he could not run from God’s sovereignty. God hurls a violent, supernatural storm into the Mediterranean Sea. The storm is so intense that the wooden cargo ship is on the verge of being physically shattered. Nature itself acts as God’s instrument to block the prophet’s path of rebellion.
Jonah 1:5
Verse:
Then the mariners were afraid and cried every man unto his god and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship and he lay and was fast asleep.
English Explanation: The crisis terrifies the experienced, pagan sailors, driving each of them to pray frantically to their own deities. They take practical survival measures by throwing valuable cargo into the sea to keep the ship afloat. In sharp, ironic contrast, Jonah—the only man onboard who knows the true Living God responsible for the storm—is deep in the hull of the ship, completely unconscious and fast asleep in a state of spiritual apathy.
