Matthew Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Matthew 19:4 – Matthew 20:9)

Matthew 19:4

Verse: And he answered and said unto them Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female

  • English Explanation: Jesus responds to the Pharisees’ trick question about divorce by redirecting them to Genesis. He emphasizes God’s original intent for humanity at creation. By establishing that God created only two distinct genders—male and female—He sets the foundation that marriage is a divine, foundational institution designed to unite these two complements.

Matthew 19:5

Verse: And said For this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh

  • English Explanation: Christ quotes Genesis 2:24, explaining the mechanics of marriage. It requires a shifting of priorities: leaving one’s parental household and “cleaving” (binding tightly) to a spouse. The phrase “one flesh” highlights that marriage creates an entirely new, inseparable biological and spiritual entity.

Matthew 19:6

Verse: Wherefore they are no more twain but one flesh What therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder

  • English Explanation: Jesus concludes that because a married couple becomes a single unit in God’s eyes, human authority has no right to dissolve it. Marriage is not merely a legal or social contract; it is a permanent covenant sealed by God Himself.

Matthew 19:7

Verse: They say unto him Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away

  • English Explanation: The Pharisees challenge Jesus by bringing up Deuteronomy 24:1-4. They misinterpret Moses’ civil regulation regarding the procedure of divorce as an absolute commandment or endorsement to divorce.

Matthew 19:8

Verse: He saith unto them Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives but from the beginning it was not so

  • English Explanation: Jesus corrects them by clarifying that Moses “suffered” (permitted) divorce only as a concession to contain human sin and protect women from worse mistreatment. It was never God’s ideal or original design (“from the beginning it was not so”).

Matthew 19:9

Verse: And I say unto you Whosoever shall put away his wife except it be for fornication and shall marry another committeth adultery and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery

  • English Explanation: Jesus re-establishes the high standard of the Kingdom. He states that divorcing a spouse and marrying someone else constitutes adultery, noting sexual immorality (porneia) as the tragic breach that breaks the marriage bond.

Matthew 19:10

Verse: His disciples say unto him If the case of the man be so with his wife it is not good to marry

  • English Explanation: Shocked by the strictness of Jesus’ teaching, the disciples react by suggesting that if marriage is so binding and difficult to dissolve, it might be safer and better to avoid marriage altogether.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:11

Verse: But he said unto them All men cannot receive this saying save they to whom it is given

  • English Explanation: Jesus acknowledges that lifelong celibacy or the strict demand of Christian marriage is not something everyone can easily accept or practice. It requires a specific grace and calling given by God.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:12

Verse: For there are some eunuchs which were so born from their mother’s womb and there are some eunuchs which were made eunuchs of men and there be eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake He that is able to receive it let him receive it

  • English Explanation: Jesus lists three types of “eunuchs” (those who do not marry): those born without the capacity, those castrated by others, and those who voluntarily choose singlehood to focus entirely on serving God’s kingdom. He leaves this as a voluntary call for those who can handle it.

Matthew 19:13

Verse: Then were there brought unto him little children that he should put his hands on them and pray and the disciples rebuked them

  • English Explanation: People bring children to Jesus for blessings and prayers. The disciples, viewing children as low-status and an interruption to Jesus’ valuable time, rebuke the parents and try to turn them away.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:14

Verse: But Jesus said Suffer little children and forbid them not to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven

  • English Explanation: Jesus defends the children. He commands the disciples to let them come, declaring that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who possess the humble, dependent, and trusting nature of a child.

Matthew 19:15

Verse: And he laid his hands on them and departed thence

  • English Explanation: Demonstrating His love and accessible nature, Jesus takes the time to personally bless the children by laying His hands on them before moving on to His next destination.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:16

Verse: And behold one came and said unto him Good Master what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life

  • English Explanation: A wealthy young man approaches Jesus with a transactional view of salvation. He believes that eternal life can be earned by performing a specific, outstanding “good deed.”

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:17

Verse: And he said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God but if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments

  • English Explanation: Jesus challenges the young man’s casual use of the word “good,” pointing out that God alone is the ultimate standard of goodness. He then points him to the Law to reveal the man’s need for a Savior.

Matthew 19:18

Verse: He saith unto him Which Jesus said Thou shalt do no murder Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness

  • Explanation: The man asks for specifics, and Jesus lists commandments from the second table of the Decalogue (human-to-human relationships), which are easier to measure outwardly.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:19

Verse: Honour thy father and thy mother and Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself

  • English Explanation: Jesus concludes the list by highlighting the command to honor parents and the summary statement of the social law: loving one’s neighbor as oneself.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:20

Verse: The young man saith unto him All these things have I kept from my youth up what lack I yet

  • English Explanation: The young man claims complete external obedience to these laws since childhood. However, his question (“what lack I yet?”) reveals an internal restlessness, proving he knows his outward religion is not enough.

Matthew 19:21

Verse: Jesus said unto him If thou wilt be perfect go and sell that thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come and follow me

  • English Explanation: Jesus exposes the man’s true idol: wealth. By asking him to sell everything, give to the poor, and follow Him, Jesus challenges him to love God above all else and secure true heavenly treasure.

Matthew 19:22

Verse: But when the young man heard that saying he went away sorrowful for he had great possessions

  • English Explanation: The young man chooses his earthly wealth over eternal life. His grief shows that his possessions actually possessed him, preventing him from fully surrendering to Christ.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:23

Verse: Then said Jesus unto his disciples Verily I say unto you That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses this tragic moment as a lesson, telling His disciples that it is extremely difficult for a wealthy person to enter heaven, because riches often breed self-reliance and false security.

Matthew 19:24

Verse: And again I say unto you It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God

  • English Explanation: Using a vivid hyperbole, Jesus emphasizes that a rich person saving themselves is humanly impossible. A huge beast of burden cannot pass through a tiny sewing needle’s eye.

Matthew 19:25

Verse: When his disciples heard it they were exceedingly amazed saying Who then can be saved

  • English Explanation: In ancient Jewish culture, wealth was often viewed as a sign of God’s direct blessing. Therefore, the disciples are shocked, reasoning that if even the rich (who have resources to do good) cannot be saved, then salvation is impossible for everyone.

Matthew 19:26

Verse: But Jesus beheld them and said unto them With men this is impossible but with God all things are possible

  • English Explanation: Jesus looks at them intently and delivers a fundamental truth of the gospel: Salvation is entirely a work of God. Human effort cannot achieve it, but God’s transforming grace can save anyone, even a rich man.

Matthew 19:27

Verse: Then answered Peter and said unto him Behold we have forsaken all and followed thee what shall we have therefore

  • English Explanation: Peter compares the disciples to the rich young ruler. Since they actually did leave their livelihoods and families to follow Jesus, he asks what rewards await them.

Matthew 19:28

Verse: And Jesus said unto them Verily I say unto you That ye which have followed me in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel

  • English Explanation: Jesus promises an extraordinary eschatological reward. In the renewal of all things (the final restoration), the apostles will occupy authoritative positions of honor, reigning alongside Him.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 19:29

Verse: And every one that hath forsaken houses or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my name’s sake shall receive an hundredfold and shall inherit everlasting life

  • English Explanation: Jesus extends this promise to all believers. Anyone who experiences loss or makes sacrifices for His sake will receive a far greater spiritual family and community in this life, followed by eternal life.

Matthew 19:30

Verse: But many that are first shall be last and the last shall be first

  • English Explanation: This paradoxical statement serves as a warning against spiritual pride. Those who enjoy high status or early privilege on earth may end up last in eternity, while the overlooked and humble will be elevated.

Matthew 20:1

Verse: For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard

  • English Explanation: Jesus begins a parable to illustrate the “first shall be last” principle. The householder represents God, who actively initiatives the invitation to work in His kingdom (the vineyard) starting early in the day (around 6:00 AM).

Matthew 20:2

Verse: And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day he sent them into his vineyard

  • English Explanation: The first group of workers agrees to a specific, fair contract: one denarius (“a penny”) for a full day’s labor. This was the standard daily wage for a laborer at that time.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 20:3

Verse: And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace

  • English Explanation: At the “third hour” (around 9:00 AM), the householder returns to the marketplace and finds more individuals who are unemployed and waiting for an opportunity.

Matthew 20:4

Verse: And said unto them Go ye also into the vineyard and whatsoever is right I will give you And they went their way

  • English Explanation: Unlike the first group, these workers do not negotiate a specific wage. They enter the vineyard based purely on trust in the master’s promise to pay them “whatsoever is right.”

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 20:5

Verse: Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour and did likewise

  • English Explanation: The master continues to seek out workers throughout the day, repeating the process at noon (the sixth hour) and at 3:00 PM (the ninth hour), showing his ongoing desire to employ those in need.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 20:6

Verse: And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle and saith unto them Why stand ye here all the day idle

  • English Explanation: At the “eleventh hour” (around 5:00 PM), with only one hour left of the workday, the master makes a final trip and questions those still standing around without work.

Matthew 20:7

Verse: They say unto him Because no man hath hired us He saith unto them Go ye also into the vineyard and whatsoever is right that shall ye receive

  • English Explanation: The workers explain that their idleness is due to a lack of opportunity, not laziness. The master immediately extends the invitation to them, promising proper compensation despite the late hour.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Matthew 20:8

Verse: So when even was come the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward Call the labourers and give them their hire beginning from the last unto the first

  • English Explanation: At the end of the day (6:00 PM), the master instructs his manager to pay the workers. He purposely reverses the order, paying the last-hired workers first, setting up the ultimate lesson in grace.

Matthew 20:9

Verse: And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour they received every man a penny

  • English Explanation: The eleventh-hour workers, who only labored for a single hour, receive a full day’s wage (a denarius). This highlights the master’s radical generosity and grace, demonstrating that God’s rewards are based on His goodness, not human merit.
