Detailed English Explanation
1. “And he went in unto Hagar”
The expression “went in unto” is an older biblical expression referring to marital or sexual relations between a man and a woman. In this context, it means that Abram had sexual relations with Hagar according to the arrangement made by Sarai.
The verse should therefore be understood in connection with Genesis 16:1–3. Sarai had given Hagar to Abram because Sarai was unable to bear children herself. Hagar was Sarai’s Egyptian maidservant.
This detail is important because Genesis 16 is not merely describing a pregnancy. It is showing the consequences of a complicated family decision.
2. “And she conceived”
The next statement is simple: Hagar became pregnant.
Hagar’s pregnancy changed her position within the household. Before this event, she was Sarai’s servant. Now she was carrying Abram’s child.
In the ancient world, having children could have significant social and family importance. Pregnancy could therefore affect how a person viewed himself or herself and how others viewed that person.
The verse does not say that Hagar’s pregnancy itself was sinful. Rather, it focuses on what happened to the relationship between Hagar and Sarai afterward.
3. “When she saw that she had conceived”
This phrase emphasizes Hagar’s awareness of her new condition.
Hagar knew that she was carrying Abram’s child. This knowledge appears to have affected her attitude toward Sarai.
The verse presents a progression:
Pregnancy → change in status and confidence → change in attitude → conflict.
The Bible often shows how circumstances can reveal what is happening inside people’s hearts. A change in circumstances does not necessarily create every attitude, but it can bring those attitudes into the open.
4. “Her mistress was despised in her eyes”
This is the most important part of Genesis 16:4.
The word “despised” conveys the idea of being regarded with contempt or being treated as less worthy of respect. Hagar began to look upon Sarai differently.
The phrase “in her eyes” emphasizes Hagar’s personal attitude or perception. The issue was not merely an external disagreement. Hagar’s view of Sarai had changed.
Hagar had been Sarai’s servant, but after becoming pregnant with Abram’s child, she apparently developed a sense of superiority toward Sarai.
This created a painful situation because Sarai was already struggling with infertility. The woman who had been Sarai’s servant was now pregnant with Abram’s child, while Sarai herself remained without a child.
5. The human conflict in the verse
Genesis 16:4 illustrates how a decision made to solve one problem can sometimes create another.
Sarai wanted a child and chose a particular solution. Abram agreed. Hagar became pregnant. Yet instead of producing peace, the arrangement resulted in tension.
The passage therefore encourages readers to think about the consequences of human decisions. People may act because they are afraid, impatient, disappointed, or convinced that they must solve a problem themselves. But the results may be much more complicated than expected.
6. A lesson about pride and relationships
Hagar’s response also demonstrates the danger of pride.
Her pregnancy gave her a new position within the family, but that new position did not make Sarai worthless. Human dignity should not depend entirely on social position, success, wealth, fertility, or family circumstances.
At the same time, the broader chapter also shows that Sarai’s treatment of Hagar later became harsh. Therefore, the passage should not be reduced to simply saying that one woman was entirely right and the other entirely wrong.
Genesis 16 presents a deeply human conflict involving disappointment, power, insecurity, pride, and suffering.
7. God’s larger purpose
Genesis 16:4 is also part of a larger biblical story. God had already made promises concerning Abram’s descendants. The events involving Hagar occur within that larger story.
The chapter demonstrates that human attempts to control circumstances do not cancel God’s purposes. Even when people make complicated or painful choices, God remains aware of the people involved.
Later in Genesis 16, God sees Hagar in her distress and speaks to her. This is an important reminder that the biblical account does not ignore Hagar simply because she was a servant. God sees her suffering and addresses her personally.
“And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.”
